Woman has to travel through gator-infested waters just to take her trash out every week

Katie, who lives on the banks of the Satilla River in Georgia, discovers a whole new meaning to living on the periphery. As evidenced by her well-known TikTok account, KayakKatie, an ordinary chore of taking out the trash can becomes an extraordinary adventure here. She posted a video of this unusual routine, and it has already received an incredible 8 million views on the platform.

With their house completely encircled by water, Katie and her spouse have embraced total isolation. Katie goes on an exciting weekly adventure to get rid of their trash. She sets out wearing her go-to “gator waders,” which are necessary for negotiating the marsh full of alligators hiding in plain sight. Tucked safely in her overalls for the journey ahead, her devoted Chihuahua companion comes along for the ride.

Waders are the first item on this trash disposal expedition; they are not a fashion accessory, but rather an essential item for survival in this untamed setting. Katie’s narration in the video begins, “First things first: grab the gator waders.” “Get the little doggo is the second step,” she continues, mentioning her Chihuahua.

After she loads up her kayak with trash, Katie, a seasoned explorer in her own right, paddles across the murky water with skill. However, the adventure doesn’t end there. After arriving on land, she boards an ATV to make the last stretch to the dumpster, but she has to get past a locked gate, which presents another challenge.

“Unfortunately, the guys locked it before they left this morning,” Katie says in the video, “so I have to walk the rest of the way,” unfazed, she continues on.

Finally reaching her destination, Katie surveys her isolated domain. “We made it,” she declares. “No neighbors this way, and none that way either!” she quips.

For Katie, thriving is more important than merely surviving in this harsh environment. Even though she is alone and vulnerable to difficulties—hurricane Idalia’s visit last summer serving as one such instance—she finds comfort in the breathtaking beauty and peace of her surroundings.

“To me, the struggles are nothing compared to the benefits of being here for our mental and physical health,” Katie ponders in a different clip. “The bugs, trash runs, gators, snakes, none of that compares to the peace that we feel and serenity and just being relaxed and living an amazing life.”
Katie’s unusual lifestyle, which consists of living in a house entirely surrounded by water in the middle of a river, captivates viewers. One viewer echoed the sentiments of many when they said, “I knew this was going to be an adventure the moment you mentioned ‘gator waders’ as step one.”

Another viewer chimed in with a humorous remark: “This is what my husband thinks taking out the trash is like every time I ask him to do it!”
“My house would just be overflowing with trash bags if I had to go through that,” someone else joked.
Katie shared that she and her husband purchased the home after their two adult children had left the nest.
