Pilot dies in bathroom of Boeing 787, forces an emergency landing after Miami takeoff

According to individuals on board the Boeing 787 airplane, a pilot fainted and passed away while in the lavatory on a commercial journey from Miami to Chile. This unfortunate incident led to an unplanned landing in Panama on Sunday night.

Iván Andaur, aged 56, experienced a heart attack while piloting a LATAM Airlines flight bound for Santiago around 11 p.m., as reported by The Sun.

According to the report, the paper stated that while a nurse and two doctors onboard hurried to rescue him, his two copilots were compelled to perform an unplanned landing at Tocumen International Airport in Panama City.

“Unfortunately, we did not have the necessary or sufficient supplies to perform a good resuscitation,” a nurse stated, who has been identified by the name Isadora on social media platforms. “LATAM needs to improve the issue of protocols in case of health and medical emergencies like this where lives can be saved but the resources are needed.”

The exact nature of the “resources” she mentioned was not immediately evident.

Approximately 40 minutes after the plane took off, a co-pilot inquired if there were any physicians among the passengers, according to a statement from one individual on board.

“They told us that we were going to land because the pilot felt sick and when we arrived they asked us to evacuate the plane because the situation had worsened,” a passenger noted, whose identity was not revealed.

Passengers were accommodated in hotels situated in Panama City, with the flight recommencing on Tuesday.

“All the necessary protocols were followed during the flight to safeguard the life of the affected pilot. Unfortunately, after landing and receiving further medical assistance, the pilot passed away,” LATAM Airlines said in a statement.

“LATAM Airlines is deeply saddened by this event and takes this opportunity to express our most sincere condolences to the family of our employee.”
