Israeli units committed ‘gross human rights violations’ prior to Oct. 7, State Department says

The State Department revealed on Monday that Five units of the Israel Defense Force were involved in “serious breaches of human rights” outside the Gaza Strip before the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds.

Israel has “remediated” four IDF units, according to a spokesperson, while an undisclosed fifth unit is still under consideration for potential penalties from the US, such as the cessation of military training, equipment, and aid.

“We continue to be in consultations and engagements with the Government of Israel. They have submitted additional information as it pertains to that unit,” Vedant Patel, principal deputy spokesperson for the State Department said to reporters.

According to the Leahy Laws, the United States is prohibited from providing support to military groups that have been accused of breaching laws related to human rights.
