The most popular Cryptocurrency Donations plugin on WordPress.org websites with 3,000+ installs called Cryptocurrency Payment & Donation Box has morphed itself into a scam that steals crypto donations from users.
The complaints have started to roll in on the plugin’s support threads. There’s also a confused user wondering where all the options to enter crypto addresses went.
As it turns out, an update about two months ago removed the crypto address options, removed the users’ addresses, and replaced all the QR codes with links that lead to the scammer’s cryptocurrency wallets.
The plugin author’s website is unreachable and throws an ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED error.
We, The AEGIS Alliance had used this plugin for a long time and didn’t even notice what was going on until recently. Now we’re using a simple copy-text method with a plugin on our website for the crypto addresses.
WordPress websites still using this plugin are urged to uninstall it and use different crypto donation methods such as copy and paste. We recommend using the Copy Anything to Clipboard plugin’s shortcodes.
