US joins forces with Taliban to battle ISIS in Afghanistan after withdrawal

According to a report, since the abrupt withdrawal of the US in 2021, Afghanistan has become a refuge for ISIS militants to plot and execute their assaults. However, the US has found an unexpected partner in the struggle against terrorism in the Taliban.

As per a senior US defense official cited by the Washington Post, the Taliban, an Islamic extremist organization that took control of Afghanistan following the US exit, has purportedly impeded the activities of ISIS-K or the Islamic State-Khorasan.

According to the official, the rival factions of religious zealots are openly engaged in a war with each other.

ISIS-K has attacked ethnic minorities and governmental establishments, while the Taliban has responded by targeting ISIS-K’s hideouts.

“I would never want to say that we had mortgaged our counterterrorism to a group like the Taliban, but it’s a fact that, operationally, they put pressure on ISIS-K. In a strange world, we have mutually beneficial objectives there,” the official stated according to the Washington Post.

The remarks from the defense official were made in reaction to a leaked evaluation from the Pentagon, which claimed that Islamic State militants are once more utilizing Afghanistan as a base for devising schemes against the United States, Europe, and Asia, as reported by the newspaper.

The report depicted the resurgent danger as an escalating security apprehension. The US intelligence assessment outlined concrete strategies to attack churches, embassies, commercial establishments, and even the World Cup soccer championship. Pentagon authorities were aware of nine ISIS-managed schemes in December, and the number had increased to 15 by February.

Even though the report was labeled as top-secret and bore the emblem of Defense Department institutions, the White House refused to confirm its validity.

Federal authorities have accused Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, of including the classified papers as part of a more extensive disclosure that he shared with his acquaintances on a private Discord server, NBC News reported. According to present and former US officials, the leaked records validate prior alerts regarding the potential revival of terrorist factions in Afghanistan.

In a statement, the Biden administration defended its approach towards counterterrorism.

“The United States maintains the ability to remove terrorists from the battlefield without permanent troop presence on the ground,” National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson stated.

As evidence, Watson referred to the US-led mission that eradicated the self-declared Islamic caliphate in 2019, as well as a US Special Operations strike in Somalia that eliminated Bilal al-Sudani, an ISIS commander. The leaked reports claimed that the defeat of the Islamic caliphate has added to the difficulties of ISIS as it cannot find safe havens to carry out its activities.

According to a senior US defense official, the count of Islamic State schemes has previously fluctuated, and a considerable number of them never come to fruition.

“We see a lot of discussion and not a lot of action at this point,” the official noted.
