South Korean speedskating coach gets 10 years in prison for raping teen Olympian
(The AEGIS Alliance) – A South Korean speedskating coach on Thursday was sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison for sexually assaulting an Olympic champion skater over a span of three years.
Cho Jae-beom was convicted of raping two-time Olympic gold medalist Shim Suk-hee while he was coached her, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency.
Now age 23 Shim, stated Cho began sexually assaulting her when she was 17 and continued until 2017, the Guardian reported. Additionally, Shim mentioned Cho had been abusive to her physically since she was only 7-years-old.
The South Korean courtroom stated Cho used his power as her coach to silence Shim, “repeatedly using the victim’s inability to protest against her speed skating coach for the national team,” Yonhap News reports.
Cho was previously sentenced to prison for 18 months for his physical abuse of Shim, Yonhap News wrote. He’s set to serve a total of 12 years locked up behind bars.
