Jackson State University President Resigns After Prostitution Sting Arrest

(The AEGIS Alliance) – MISSISSIPPI – The president of Jackson State University, William Bynum Jr. resigned on Monday after being arrested in central Mississippi last weekend during a prostitution sting.

According to a press release by the Clinton Police Department, the operation that lasted two days was in contact with offenders via dark web websites online, and as a result, 17 people were arrested. 57-year-old Bynum was included in the arrests and is accused of procuring services of a prostitute, providing a false statement of his identity, and just marijuana possession.

Clinton Police Chief Ford Hayman said in a news conference on Monday that the arrests were made after the suspects responded to an advertisement online for prostitution services, but when they showed up for the services there was an undercover officer waiting for them at a hotel near the area of Interstate 20, according to the Associated Press.

An art gallery director for Jackson State University named Shonda McCarthy was also arrested during the sting operation. McCarthy is being charged with procuring services of a prostitute and just marijuana possession, but while operating a motor vehicle.

The Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning gave a news release on Monday that Bynum had resigned from the University. It was later found that they held an emergency meeting that day in the afternoon to talk about a “Jackson State University personnel matter,” which resulted in Thomas Hudson being named the acting president of JSU.

Bynum began his position at JSU in May of 2017 after being appointed. Before that time, Bynum was worked for four years as president of Mississippi Valley State University.

It is unclear at this time if Bynum or McCarthy have retained an attorney to represent them.
