Man Arrested for Same Crime Hours After Being Released From Jail

CAMDEN COUNTY, NEW JERSEY – A man was arrested two years ago for stealing a vehicle, and is now in jail again after allegedly stealing another vehicle just hours after getting out of jail, the Camden County Sheriff’s Office says.

Officers were dispatched to a residential burglary call in northern Camden County on September 4, 2017, after someone reported their BMW car had been stolen. An investigation by officers led to Dequon Jones being identified as the suspect.

Mr Jones was arrested in Orange County, Florida in April of this year, and officers discovered the man still had the stolen BMW car in his possession, according to police. On April 15, Mr Jones was extradited to Camden County and was charged with motor vehicle theft and burglary, officers say.

Dequon Jones was released from jail on November 12, 2019. Within two hours, Mr. Jones reportedly stole a truck in Woodbine, Georgia, and was arrested again, according to authorities.

Mr. Jones had only walked a couple of blocks away from the sheriff’s office, spotted a truck, and stole it from construction workers who were doing some work on a house in Sheriff Jim Proctor’s own neighborhood, sheriff’s say.

Mr Jones drove away in the truck he stole but was caught by police just a few hundred yards away.

The sheriff’s office told reporters in a news conference on Friday, November 15 that, “Dequon (Jones) is either very unlucky, a dumb criminal, likes Camden County jail food, or all of the above.”
