Runner chugs 25 glasses of wine during London marathon, ‘I was totally exhausted’

He made it past the finish wine.

A wine vendor set a new standard for drinkers and athletes alike by participating in a blind taste test of 25 glasses of wine during the London marathon — almost matching the number of miles run. The wine connoisseur’s athletic feat has gained widespread attention, with 3.9 million views on TikTok.

“I was totally exhausted, totally cooked, but it was just such a great day,” Tom Gilbey, operator of wine companies, said to the Guardian about his grape flavored feat.

Referred to as the “wine guy” on TikTok, the British man often records himself engaging in different drink sampling sessions and showcasing ways to find high-quality wine without breaking the bank.

In his most recent display of courage and determination, the winemaker athlete made the bold decision to participate in the London marathon with the goal of collecting $2,487 for the Sobell House hospice charity in Oxford. This organization provided care for his mother in her last moments. To date, they have gathered more than $16,000 in donations.

As an extra test of skill, the versatile Brit opted to try a glass of wine for each mile completed while also attempting to identify the type, region, and year of production of the beverage.

“Shiraz, Australia, 2022,” Gilbey accurately predicts after tasting one of the glasses, distributed along the way like refreshments.

According to reports, he accurately identified all aspects of seven out of the 25 glasses, incorrectly identified four, and mostly got the rest correct, potentially missing one objective.

Despite this, the accomplishment was particularly remarkable as the samples varied from gas station selections to $50 Barolo bottles.

According to reports, Gilbey completed the race in 4 hours and 41 minutes, with breaks for wine, and marked the occasion by enjoying a glass of champagne at the end of the race.

The British runner found that the wine strangely made the marathon distance of over 26 miles seem less never-ending.

“It was hilarious because when you’re overtaken by a fridge and double-humped camel, you could get really depressed unless you knew there was a nice wine around the corner with some friendly faces to support you,” he laughed.

Despite indulging in alcohol while sailing, Gilbey asserted that the pain of jogging left him with only the “desire to complete the race,” quipping that it was a “great way to stay sober.”

Despite this, the grape lover mentioned that he consciously refrained from consuming all the options to prevent fainting during the race, stating: “If they were good, I might swallow it and if they were bad, they went on the road.”

It goes without saying that viewers on TikTok were amazed by his actual drinking marathon.

“This man drank 26 different wines & still managed a sub 5 marathon. Let that sink in,” one fan lauded.

Another noted that, “Being a marathon runner AND a sommelier are two of the most pretentious hobbies but I absolutely love this guy.”

“All the back labels said they’d pair wonderfully with some cheese or gentle marathon,” a third added.

In the end, Gilbey is pleased that he was able to enjoy some alcoholic beverages in support of a noble purpose.

“It’s just incredible and it’s great because that’s what it’s all about. It’s for a great charity and they’re one of many hospices that just work their socks off to make massive differences,” an enthused Gilby said.

The runner adamantly insists that he would never participate in such a challenge again, despite his previous claims of being “100% committed. He wants “everybody to have a silly idea for a good cause and see what happens.”

While Gilbey’s alcohol may be noteworthy, it doesn’t hold a candle to the feat achieved by this elderly Chinese man. He managed to complete a full marathon of 26.2 miles in a mere 3.5 hours all while casually puffing on cigarettes.
