Woman plowed her car directly through New Jersey emergency room: cops

Just before the year officially began, a Delaware woman was arrested by police on Wednesday after she crashed her car through an emergency access point at Inspira Hospital in Bridgeton, New Jersey.

At about 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Bridgeton police officers were called to the hospital, located on Irving Avenue, for an emergency involving a car that had struck the hospital structure. Officers arrived to find a car had broken through the ambulance bay entrance doors and driven about 60 feet down a hospital hallway, barely avoiding a security officer.

The security guard was trying to avoid being hit by the car when he suffered minor injuries, an Inspira Health Network spokesperson confirmed Wednesday.

The driver, who lived in New Castle, Delaware, and was 38 years old, stayed at the scene of the accident. She did not need medical attention, according to a press release from law enforcement, and no other people were hurt in the collision.

Ambulance services were temporarily rerouted to other locations until around 3:30 a.m., according to a hospital spokesperson, while the damaged entrance was guarded and a backup route for emergency vehicles was set up.

The spokesperson added that patient care was unaffected and that the hospital’s walk-in emergency entrance remained open during the incident.

The woman was then taken into custody and charged with assault by motor vehicle, recklessly endangering another person, and third-degree criminal mischief, according to online court records and law enforcement officials.

She was being detained at the Cumberland County Jail as of Wednesday while additional court proceedings were being conducted.
