Heart-pumping video shows rescuers save a beached great white shark on Nantucket beach
An unexpected twist occurred to a family’s weekend trip to Massachusetts’ Low Beach on Nantucket when they saw the amazing spectacle of a great white shark stranded on the shore. The struggling creature, its massive body battered by the relentless waves, was first spotted by Liza Phillips, a vacationer enjoying the sun and surf.
The shark was in serious danger; it appeared to be stuck in the shallows. It could not get back to the deeper waters it knew as home because its fins were stuck in the sand. Ted Rock and Phillips didn’t hesitate to take immediate action. Their mission was to force the hurt animal back into the ocean, so they bravely waded into the surf.
It was a risky and delicate rescue operation. The shark was obviously upset; its body bore scars from its ordeal. With great care, Phillips and Rock sidestepped the beast’s formidable jaws as they worked to give it the last push it needed to return to safety.
“It was so helpless, we were thinking it was going to get back in itself but it was completely beached,” Liza Phillips said to the Nantucket Current. “We said we have to step up and try to help. Definitely, there was some adrenaline involved. One of our guests took off his shirt to go in, and I said I’m going, too,” Phillips added.
The rescue served as a monument to the bravery and generosity of strangers. For Phillips, who had never thought she would be in this kind of situation, it was “unbelievable.” The family had experienced an event that would live on in their memories for eternity when they decided to visit Low Beach, deviating from their usual routine.
“Touching a great white? That’s not even something you put on a bucket list because it’s just so unbelievable,” she spoke of the experience with bewilderment.
