Runner chugs 25 glasses of wine during London marathon, ‘I was totally exhausted’
He made it past the finish wine.
During the London Marathon, a wine vendor nearly matched the number of miles run by taking part in a blind taste test of 25 glasses of wine, setting a new record for both athletes and wine drinkers. The wine expert’s athletic achievement has received a lot of attention; it has received 3.9 million views on TikTok.
“I was totally exhausted, totally cooked, but it was just such a great day,” Wine company owner Tom Gilbey told the Guardian about his grape flavored accomplishment.
Known as the “wine guy” on TikTok, the British man frequently posts videos of himself trying out various drinks and demonstrating where to get good wine at reasonable prices.
The winemaker-athlete recently showed courage and tenacity by deciding to run the London marathon with the aim of raising $2,487 for the Oxford-based Sobell House hospice charity. His mother received care from this organization in her final moments. They have received donations totaling more than $16,000 thus far.
In an added challenge, the adaptable British man decided to try a glass of wine for every mile run and to guess the kind, location, and year the wine was produced.
“Shiraz, Australia, 2022,” tastes one of the glasses, which are passed around like snacks, and Gilbey makes an accurate prediction.
Reports state that he correctly identified every feature of seven of the twenty-five glasses, misidentified four, and mostly identified the remaining glasses correctly, possibly missing one goal.
In spite of this, the achievement was especially noteworthy because the samples ranged from $50 Barolo bottles to choices from the gas station.
With wine breaks, Gilbey finished the race in 4 hours and 41 minutes, according to reports, and celebrated with a glass of champagne at the finish.
The wine, according to the British runner, had the odd effect of making the over 26-mile marathon seem less endless.

(Tom Gilbey/Instagram)“It was hilarious because when you’re overtaken by a fridge and double-humped camel, you could get really depressed unless you knew there was a nice wine around the corner with some friendly faces to support you,” he laughed.
Gilbey claimed that even though he drank during sailing, the agony of running left him with nothing more than the “desire to complete the race,” adding that it was a “great way to stay sober.”
To avoid passing out during the race, the grape lover admitted that he purposefully avoided eating every option, saying, “If they were good, I might swallow it and if they were bad, they went on the road.”
It goes without saying that his real drinking marathon astounded TikTok viewers.
“This man drank 26 different wines & still managed a sub 5 marathon. Let that sink in,” one fan lauded.
Another noted that, “Being a marathon runner AND a sommelier are two of the most pretentious hobbies but I absolutely love this guy.”
“All the back labels said they’d pair wonderfully with some cheese or gentle marathon,” a third added.
Ultimately, Gilbey is happy that he was able to partake in some alcohol while aiding a worthy cause.
“It’s just incredible and it’s great because that’s what it’s all about. It’s for a great charity and they’re one of many hospices that just work their socks off to make massive differences,” an enthused Gilby said.
The runner, who had earlier declared himself to be “100% committed,” is adamant that he would never take part in a challenge of this nature again. “Everyone should have a silly idea for a good cause and see what happens,” is his stated goal.
Gilbey’s alcohol may be notable, but this old Chinese man’s achievement is far more impressive. While smoking cigarettes casually, he finished a full marathon (26.2 miles) in just 3.5 hours.
