Hundreds of spectators flocked to a pub garden on Monday to witness the extraordinary spectacle of the 2024 “World Gravy Wrestling Championships.” A large crowd of onlookers gathered in a pub’s outdoor seating area on Monday to behold the unusual sight.
Proclaimed as one of the ten most bizarre “sports,” this international competition pits sixteen men and eight women against each other in an arena covered in sauce. A total of 24 competitors—16 men and 8 women—compete in this strange worldwide competition, which is considered to be one of the most peculiar sporting events in the world. It’s a messy competition full of condiments.
Held at the Rose ‘N’ Bowl pub in Rossendale, Lancashire, this annual event sees the consumption of approximately 528 gallons of gravy.
Spectators dress in extravagant costumes and compete to win the championship title by defeating their opponents in a two-minute wrestling match in the brown sauce.
A panel of four seasoned judges will determine the tournament’s ultimate winners by evaluating each competitor’s wrestling prowess and fancy dress choices.
Funny clips from the match show the wrestlers battling on top of each other, their bodies slowly covered in gravy.
Another video showed two women cuddling up to each other in the wrestling ring as the referee teasingly doused their heads in gravy.
The names of the two winners—one from the male division and one from the female—will be inscribed on the trophy and they will each receive a $66 prize.
This amusing tournament started in 2007 and was included in the 2019 Guinness Book of World Records.
In addition to raising money for East Lancashire Hospice, the wrestlers will have the opportunity to fundraise for their own personal causes. The event is being hosted by the pub.
