Pam Bondi Out as AG: Todd Blanche Now Set for Permanent DOJ Nomination Amid Epstein Files Fallout

BREAKING NEWS | Trump Fires Attorney General Pam Bondi Over Handling Of Epstein Files | Todd Blanche

The leadership shakeup at the Justice Department has since moved well past the initial announcement. President Trump has signaled he intends to nominate acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to lead the department permanently; asked during a Pod Force One interview whether Blanche would become attorney general, Trump replied, “I think he will,” and indicated he was not weighing other candidates. In his April 7 debut news conference as acting AG, Blanche was dismissive when pressed on why Bondi was removed, saying he would lead “the way that I’ve been leading as the deputy attorney general” and that “nobody has any idea why” Bondi was fired except the president. The next day, on April 8, he announced the department was investigating more than 8,000 fraud cases tied to over trillion in potentially stolen taxpayer dollars each year, framing fraud as a central priority of his tenure. On May 19, he appeared before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies to field questions on the department’s budget and direction. (CNN)

Bondi, meanwhile, was drawn back into the Epstein controversy. After Democrats moved to hold her in contempt for skipping an earlier appearance, she sat on May 29 for a nearly four-hour transcribed interview with the House Oversight Committee. In her opening statement she said the department “produced everything required under the Epstein Files Transparency Act” and that she was “proud” of its transparency record, while acknowledging “there were redaction errors.” According to the panel’s ranking Democrat, Rep. Robert Garcia, Bondi pushed blame for the mistakes onto Blanche and declined to answer questions about Trump; the committee opted to transcribe but not film the session. Two days earlier, on May 27, Bondi confirmed she had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer shortly after leaving the DOJ, disclosing that she had undergone surgery “a few weeks ago” and was recovering but “doing well.” She is taking on a new post on the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). On April 2, 2026, President Donald Trump announced the removal of Pam Bondi as U.S. Attorney General. In a Truth Social post, Trump described Bondi as “a Great American Patriot and a loyal friend, who faithfully served as my Attorney General over the past year.” He added that she would transition to “a much needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future.” Trump named Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche to serve as acting attorney general, calling him “a very talented and respected Legal Mind.” (BBC)

Bondi responded on social media, stating she would spend the next month transitioning the office to Blanche before moving to her new private-sector role. She called leading the Justice Department “the honor of a lifetime” and said she remained committed to fighting for the Trump administration.

The move marks the second major Cabinet-level change in recent weeks for the Trump administration. It comes after months of criticism directed at Bondi’s leadership of the Department of Justice, particularly her department’s handling of records related to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Background on the Epstein Files and Criticism

Jeffrey Epstein died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges involving minors. His case has long generated public interest and demands for full transparency regarding associates, victims, and any potential co-conspirators. There is reason to allege that Epstein didn’t kill himself, and that rather, he was murdered. (The AEGIS Alliance)

During Bondi’s tenure, the Justice Department faced pressure to release government files connected to Epstein. Congress passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which Trump signed. The department released millions of documents in phases, including a major release in late January 2026. However, many records were redacted or withheld, leading to accusations of incomplete disclosure from both sides of the aisle.

Critics, including some Republican supporters of Trump who had expected full transparency, pointed to issues such as improper redactions that allegedly risked exposing victim identities, as well as documents that were said to have been held back. During a House Judiciary Committee hearing, California Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu confronted Bondi, accusing her of lying under oath about Trump’s relationship with Epstein and stating: “There are over a thousand sex trafficking victims and you have not held a single man accountable. Shame on you. If you had any decency, you would resign right after this hearing.”

Bondi also came under fire for earlier comments suggesting an “Epstein client list” was under review and for distributing materials labeled as Epstein files to influencers that contained little new information.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the department’s actions in a Fox News interview shortly after the announcement. He stated: “We have made every single congressman, senator available to come and see any document, redacted, unredacted, that they want.” Blanche added that the department had released all files related to the Epstein matter and argued it was time to move on: “And so I think to the extent that the Epstein files was a part of the last year of this justice department, it should not be a part of anything going forward.”

When asked about the connection between Bondi’s removal and the files, Blanche replied: “I have never heard President Trump say anything that the attorney general was, that anything that happened to her had anything to do with the Epstein files.” He described reports linking the two as “simply not true.” (The Hill)

Broader Context of Bondi’s Tenure

Reports from multiple outlets indicated that Trump had grown frustrated with Bondi on several fronts beyond the Epstein matter, including the pace of investigations into his political opponents. Sources familiar with the situation described the Epstein files as one factor among others that contributed to dissatisfaction. Bondi is the second Cabinet secretary removed recently, following the earlier departure of Kristi Noem from the Department of Homeland Security.

Blanche, who previously served as Trump’s personal defense attorney in his New York hush money case and was confirmed as deputy attorney general by a 52-46 Senate vote, has been closely involved in the Epstein files rollout. He appeared publicly to defend the releases and even conducted an interview with Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s convicted co-conspirator, who was later transferred to a minimum-security facility.

Bondi’s congressional testimony on the files ultimately came in the form of her closed-door House Oversight deposition, after questions had swirled over whether the committee’s focus would shift toward Blanche.

What Comes Next

With Trump now signaling a permanent nomination for Blanche, attention turns to a Senate confirmation fight and to whether the closed-door Bondi transcript will reshape the Epstein files narrative. The Justice Department under acting leadership continues its operations, with fraud enforcement elevated as a stated priority alongside the politically charged investigations that drew Trump’s attention in the first place.

The Epstein case continues to draw attention from survivors, lawmakers, and the public. One Epstein survivor noted that the issues extend beyond any single official: “This isn’t about a single person.”

The developments highlight ongoing tensions over transparency, accountability, and the priorities of the Justice Department in high-profile matters.
