South Carolina TV sports anchor arrested, cops found child sex abuse material on laptop
South Carolina sports reporter Matt Vereen was taken into custody last week after it was discovered that his personal laptop contained evidence of child sexual abuse. The prosecution claims that the 28-year-old journalist possesses explicit images and videos of young girls.
Vereen, who was employed at WACH Fox 57 in Columbia, was charged on Wednesday with child sex abuse. His employer swiftly put him on administrative leave while they investigated the grave accusations.
Vereen’s Apple computer contained an explicit picture of a girl between the ages of eleven and thirteen, according to court documents. In addition, on July 11, 2023, he is accused of trying to buy explicit videos of minor girls.
Vereen is accused of three felonies for the sexual exploitation of a minor by the State Attorney General’s Office of South Carolina. According to WIS-TV Channel 10’s report on the arrest warrant it obtained, he could spend up to 30 years in prison if found guilty.
The TV Station that employs Vereen made a statement, “WACH FOX News understands the severity of these allegations and Vereen has been placed on suspension pending an investigation. As this is a personnel matter, the station will not be commenting further at this time.”
The day before his arrest, Vereen was allegedly at work, covering the University of South Carolina football team’s season opener. The day after his arrest, the South Carolina native and University of Missouri alumnus was released from custody on a $40,000 bond. Matt Vereen could spend up to 30 years behind bars if found guilty.
