Colorado swim coach found guilty of sexual abuse against multiple underage athletes for several years

One of the top-tier team’s swimming coaches was found guilty of sexually abusing several young athletes between 1997 and 2001.

Jon Beber was found guilty on two counts of sexual assault on a minor by someone in a position of responsibility—consistent pattern of mistreatment—and one charge of sexual assault on a minor by someone in a position of trust by a jury on April 16, according to the District Attorney’s Office for the 20th Judicial District of Colorado. Beber was held without being granted bail, and on July 19, he will be sentenced.

Beber worked as a swimming coach for the Boulder Swimming Club from 1997 to 2002. The prosecution claims that during that time, he had “inappropriate sexual contact” with minors. According to the DA’s office, Jon Beber left Colorado and resigned in 2002 after his parents accused him of wrongdoing. However, at the time, the sexual assault was not officially reported to the police.

Beber had previously worked for a number of swimming organizations in Atlanta, Georgia, Albany, New York, and Florida, according to the prosecutor’s office.

In 2022, the district attorney’s office brought charges against Jon Beber in response to three victims’ claims of sexual abuse. KUSA-TV said that he was later taken into custody in Atlanta on these charges.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty made the following statement about the case: “The accused had engaged in sexual misconduct with athletes under his coaching.” The accused is now being held responsible for the pain and suffering he caused, even though a lot of time has passed and because of the bravery and tenacity of the victims. The district attorney’s office expressed pride in its advocacy of justice for the victims and expressed gratitude to the jurors for their commitment and hard work.
