Two Oklahoma men sentenced to prison for wrapping sleeping inmate in toilet paper then setting him on fire

Two Oklahomans from Tulsa were given federal prison sentences for horrifying another prisoner in December 2022.

The two were sentenced by Judge Frizzell to 60 months in prison followed by a year of supervised release.

It is alleged by the prosecution that while Gering and Tavis were detained at the Ottawa County Jail, they were seen on camera “dousing a sleeping inmate with toilet paper and igniting it.”

Fortunately, the victim was protected from serious burns by a blanket provided by the jail.

The U.S. Attorney’s office acknowledges that other prisoners helped put out the fire and stop it from spreading inside the jail. Until their official booking and transfer by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, Gering and Tavis will remain under custody.
