ROSS TOWNSHIP, PENNSYLVANIA — Bing Liu, a 37-year-old research assistant professor of computational and systems biology at the University of Pittsburgh, was found shot to death in his home on May 2, 2020. Hours later, police found a second man dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a car parked nearby on Charlemagne Circle. Ross Township police and Allegheny County investigators ruled the case a murder-suicide.
Liu’s colleagues at Pitt’s School of Medicine said he had been working on the cellular mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 infection and was close to publishing significant findings. That detail — a COVID-19 researcher killed at the height of the first wave — sent the story around the world and invited speculation that his work was the motive. Police said it was not.
Investigators identified the gunman as Hao Gu, 46, a software engineer from Moon Township employed at Eaton Corporation. Police said Gu and Liu knew each other and that the killing grew out of a dispute over an intimate partner. After shooting Liu inside the house — multiple wounds to the head, neck, torso, and extremities — Gu walked back to his car and shot himself. Authorities told the public there was no outstanding suspect and no continuing threat.
The university issued a statement mourning Liu and pledging to continue his research. UPMC, separately, had just publicized work on a microneedle-array COVID-19 vaccine patch led by dermatology chair Dr. Louis Falo — a different project than Liu’s computational biology, but part of the same campus push against the virus. Liu’s death was not tied to that vaccine work, or to any lab security incident, despite the rumor mill that followed the first headlines.
The conspiracy theories were predictable. A Chinese-born scientist studying the novel coronavirus is murdered, and the internet fills in a lab-leak plot, a silenced whistleblower, or a state hit. Police, the medical examiner, and subsequent reporting never produced evidence for any of that. The official finding has held: a personal dispute, two gunshot deaths, no third party. That does not make the loss smaller. It does mean the scientific record Liu was building stopped because of a domestic killing, not because someone needed his papers buried.
