Wasilla kardiolog Ryan McDonough døde efter husbrand som barn seksuelt misbrug materiale sag slutter uden en retssag
Dr. Ryan McDonough died inside a burning house on West Discovery Loop in Wasilla, Alaska, one day after he walked out of jail on a $50,000 bond. He was 46, a cardiologist, a short-term appointee to the Alaska State Medical Board, and a defendant on ten felony counts of possessing child sexual abuse material. On January 12, 2026, the State Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Foul play is not suspected. The criminal case died with him. The fire inquiry did not.

On December 11, 2025, Task Force Dawnbreaker contacted McDonough in Wasilla. The roster on the state dispatch included the Alaska Bureau of Investigation Technical Crimes Unit, Homeland Security Investigations, and Anchorage police. He was arrested that day on ten felony counts. Attorney Michael Branson entered a not-guilty plea in Palmer and declined to argue the facts in public. Court reporting said McDonough’s wife posted the $50,000 performance bond. He was released December 12. (Alaska-afdelingen for offentlig sikkerhed, Yahoo-nyheder / lokal rapportering)
On December 13, at about 6:50 p.m., troopers took a call about a residential fire on West Discovery Loop while high winds moved through the Mat-Su Valley. Crews found the structure fully involved. Other people who lived at the address were elsewhere and unharmed. McDonough was the only occupant listed as unaccounted for. Remains of an adult male were recovered December 14 and sent to the medical examiner. On December 15, troopers said the preliminary identification was McDonough. (Anchorage Daily News)

Tippet startede på Dropbox i juli
Public-safety summaries and subsequent news accounts trace the investigation to a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The platform named in that reporting is Dropbox. The upload window cited is late July. Anchorage police, the state’s Internet Crimes Against Children contact, received a follow-up tip and the case moved onto warrants for an internet provider plus Google and Dropbox accounts. In November, the task force searched the Wasilla house and seized devices for forensic review. The December 11 arrest came after that review, not before it. (Yahoo News)
A preliminary hearing had been set for late December in Palmer District Court. The fire landed first. Because McDonough is deceased, the ten counts will not go to trial. That is a legal fact, not a verdict. The images described in charging papers were never put in front of a jury, and no court has adopted the state’s theory as a finding of guilt.
Et bestyrelsessæde, der varede en sæson
Governor Mike Dunleavy appointed McDonough to the Alaska State Medical Board in 2025. By the time of the arrest his name was already off the roster. A spokesperson said he had stopped attending required meetings and that the governor “was never aware of any criminal investigation against him,” a line that also noted background checks do not reveal an active or future case. Alaska Public Media and KYUK reported he had been an interventional cardiologist at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center and Mat-Su Medical Group until the hospital fired him on December 11 after learning of the charges. He had previously worked at the Alaska Heart and Vascular Institute and, those outlets said, resigned from the medical board in November. (KYUK)

Brandårsagen er stadig en separat fil
The State Fire Marshal’s Office took origin-and-cause. Troopers have not publicly labeled the blaze accidental, intentional, or suspicious. Tess Williams, speaking for the Department of Public Safety in December, said investigators weigh the physical scene, the evidence, and interviews, and that the fire work remained active after the remains were identified. The January medical-examiner ruling answered how McDonough died. It did not close the question of how the house burned.
In March 2025, federal prosecutors announced the arrest of Wasilla neurologist Dr. Jeff Sponsler on a child-sexual-abuse-material possession charge and said agents had taken computers and external media from his home. That case is separate. It is cited here because two physicians in the same valley, in the same year, landed in the same category of charging documents, and because medical boards and hospital credentialing offices are now the institutions residents are asking about.
Open: the origin and cause of the December 13 fire. Open: any leftover forensic work on devices seized in November, which no longer has a defendant attached to it. Open: the narrower civic question of how a sitting or recent medical-board member was appointed, removed for missed meetings, and then arrested on a case that had been building since a summer cyber tip.
Dunleavy’s office can say a background check does not show an active investigation. That is true as far as it goes. It does not answer how hospitals, boards, and licensing shops treat a mid-investigation physician before charges hit a docket. Mat-Su Regional’s December 11 firing happened the same day as the arrest, which is the late end of that timeline, not the early one.

The AEGIS Alliance will update this URL if the fire marshal issues a public cause determination. Until then the facts are the ones in the dispatches: a cardiologist on ten felony counts, a bond, a house that burned with one person inside, a medical-examiner ruling, and a criminal file that will never be read to a jury in Palmer.
