The modern flat-Earth revival did not grow out of a new telescope or a new measurement. It grew out of video. A handful of YouTube channels spent the mid-2010s feeding a claim that every navigator, airline, satellite operator, and night-sky observer already had the tools to kill: that we live on a disc, not a globe. The physics never moved. The algorithm did.

On a flat plane with a sun circling overhead at a fixed height, that sun would never drop below the horizon. It would shrink, slow, dip, then swell and speed up as it supposedly receded and returned. It would remain visible to nearly every person on Earth at all times, except in a valley or behind a mountain, and even then it would pop back into view quickly. That is not what anyone sees. The sun disappears. It disappears at different clock times depending on longitude. Dawn in Tokyo is night in New York. A spotlight circling a pizza does not do that.

If the moon were a nearby lamp on an atmospheric circuit, viewers on different continents would see it from different angles and in different phases. They do not. The same face and the same phase are visible from every continent that can see the moon at that hour. A body a quarter-million miles away, locked in tidal rotation, produces that result. A local prop does not.

Commercial jets cruise near 30,000 feet, about 5.7 miles up. On an oblate spheroid roughly 24,901 miles around, that is a tiny radial step. You would need something closer to 150 miles of altitude before the curve becomes cartoon-obvious through a tiny cabin window. The fact that a passenger cannot “see the ball” from a 737 is not evidence against the ball. It is what the geometry predicts. Photographs from the International Space Station, weather balloons, and orbital spacecraft show the curve that airliners sit too low to advertise.

If the stars were lights on fixed tracks inside a dome, circumpolar stars viewed from southern latitudes would trace flattened ellipses, and the southern constellations would never appear at all. They do appear. The Southern Cross, Magellanic Clouds, and the rest of the southern sky are routine observing targets from Australia, South Africa, Argentina, and the Antarctic stations. A disc with a North Pole in the middle has no honest place to put them.

Texas Tech researcher Asheley Landrum surveyed attendees at a 2018 flat-Earth conference and found that almost every convert had not held the belief two years earlier. They had changed their minds after watching YouTube. In January 2019, YouTube said it would stop recommending videos that claim the Earth is flat, along with 9/11-truther material and phony medical miracle cures. The movement did not vanish. Recommendation demotion did cut the free growth that built it.

The believers kept the belief. In February 2020, limousine-jump daredevil Mike Hughes died when a homemade steam rocket he hoped would photograph a flat horizon crashed in the California desert. The footage, the funerals, and the failed backyard experiments did not produce a single new measurement that a disc requires.

Since Kitterman’s list first circulated, the public has been handed more globe evidence than any generation before it: continuous ISS livestreams, thousands of Starlink satellites in tracked orbits, the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse whose path matched globe-based predictions to the mile, Artemis hardware stacked in public view, and weather satellites that have no reason to fake a round Earth in order to forecast a thunderstorm over Ohio. Airlines still fly great-circle routes because those are the short paths on a sphere. GNSS receivers in phones still lock to a constellation that only works if the planet is an ellipsoid.
