Hollywood had its “bad apples.” Washington had its “isolated incidents.” The Vatican wrote checks and moved priests. Jeffrey Epstein was a registered offender who had already walked on a Florida sweetheart deal. The through-line was sitting in public records, victim testimony, and flight logs, and most desks declined to draw it.

Fox News ran the “bigger than Corey Feldman’s day” package and then went back to celebrity news.

Mark Foley resigned in 2006 over messages to underage pages. The machine that produced him kept running. Flight logs later showed Bill Clinton on Jeffrey Epstein’s jet far more times than the first round of coverage admitted. Virginia Giuffre’s lawsuit against Prince Andrew, the settlement, the titles stripped from Andrew on November 3, 2025, and his February 19, 2026 arrest for misconduct in public office are not “Pizzagate.” They are court paper and police paper. Clergy sexual abuse of children is not a handful of dioceses. It is a transnational institution that moved priests, fought reporting laws, and wrote settlement checks that now run into the billions. The BBC, the Guardian, and civil courts documented bishops who were told they did not have to report. Paying victims is not the same as opening the files.

Epstein was arrested in 2019 and died in a federal jail the official record still calls a suicide. His brother has spent years challenging that record, including new autopsy claims in 2026. Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted and sentenced to 20 years. The Supreme Court denied her appeal on October 6, 2025. She was moved to a prison camp in Bryan, Texas. Todd Blanche and Representative Jamie Raskin visited her in June 2026.

Congress passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act. The Department of Justice then spent months demonstrating what “transparency” means in practice. In January 2026 it had conceded that less than 1 percent of the files had been released. On January 30, 2026, it published what it called compliance: more than 3 million additional pages, about 2,000 videos, and 180,000 images, bringing the total production to nearly 3.5 million pages. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said the dump “marks the end of a very comprehensive document identification and review process.” Notable politicians, the department said, were not redacted. Victims were supposed to be. They were not always.

A dump is not a complete file. Journalist and attorney Katie Phang sued Blanche in April 2026 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, arguing the department missed the December 19, 2025 statutory deadline, withheld records referring to President Trump, failed to publish the redaction log the Act required, and both over-redacted and under-redacted. On June 25, Judge Emmet Sullivan granted a preliminary injunction, holding Phang was likely to succeed on her Administrative Procedure Act claims. On July 25 he ordered the Justice Department to hand over 10 disputed records, unredacted, for his private review. At an August 13, 2026 status hearing, Sullivan showed open frustration with DOJ attorneys. The case remains open. Bank of America, which had already faced a survivors’ suit over alleged ties to Epstein’s operation, reached a $72.5 million settlement disclosed in March 2026.

None of this is a sideshow to the original reporting. It is the same method this article named in 2016: the rich and connected get the redactions, the prison-camp transfer, the delayed dump, and the dropped investigation. The children do not. Hollywood’s reckoning still leaves most of the named predators uncharged. The Vatican keeps writing checks. The Epstein files are a 3.5-million-page production that a federal judge is still forcing the Justice Department to defend, document by document. The question this piece asked in 2016 has an answer now, and it is not a comforting one.
