FBI Released Kurt Cobain’s File: Fan Letters Accusing Murder, No Case That Overturned the Suicide Finding

WASHINGTON — The FBI quietly posted a 10-page Kurt Cobain file to the Vault in April 2021, around the 27th anniversary of the Nirvana frontman’s death. Seattle police had already ruled April 5, 1994 a suicide: shotgun, note, house in Seattle. The federal file is not a homicide investigation. It is letters. Two redacted writers, citing Nick Broomfield’s Kurt & Courtney, the book Who Killed Kurt Cobain?, and a private investigator, asked the Bureau to treat the death as murder. The letter said Love and the estate accepted the suicide finding. The department refused, citing its duty to keep public records. Retired captain Mike Low told NewsNation he had never seen a request like it in 50 years of police work. The New York Post and NewsNation ran it as exclusive fuel for an argument that was never cold.
