The official story is that Jeffrey Epstein hanged himself. Dr. Michael Baden told 60 Minutes the neck fractures and furrow do not match a hanging. The cameras were down. The guards were asleep. An extension cord sat in the cell. The FBI told the Senate it was looking at a criminal enterprise.
Whatever killed him, a lot of powerful people needed him quiet. That is why his contact directory still matters.

The file is believed to have come from the Florida case that produced Epstein’s 2008 sweetheart deal. House manager Alfredo Rodriguez took the book from the Palm Beach estate, tried to sell it, and attorneys turned him in. Gawker published a version in 2015. It holds well over 1,500 names, numbers, and addresses — friends, staff, lawyers, politicians, celebrities, royalty. A name in a Rolodex is not an indictment. It is a map of who Epstein wanted reachable.

Congress later forced a much larger dump. The Epstein Files Transparency Act passed the House 427–1, cleared the Senate by unanimous consent, and was signed November 19, 2025. On January 30, 2026 the Justice Department said it had posted more than 3.5 million additional pages. A July 2025 DOJ/FBI memo still claimed there was no “client list” and that Epstein died by suicide. That memo did not make the directory disappear. Ghislaine Maxwell is serving 20 years; on August 25, 2026 Judge Paul Engelmayer rejected her latest bid to vacate that sentence. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was stripped of titles on November 3, 2025 and arrested February 19, 2026.
The black book is still the shortest document in this file and the one people keep coming back to. The 3.5 million pages that followed did not settle who was a client, who was a victim, and who was just in the contacts. They added volume. They did not add a verdict.
