King Charles Evicts Scandal-Ridden Andrew From Buckingham Palace, Then Strips the Prince Title, the Garter, and the Lodge

King Charles III ordered Andrew out of Buckingham Palace after his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, stripped him of his military affiliations and royal patronages. A source told The Sun the King had made it “clear that Buckingham Palace is no place for Prince Andrew.” That was January 2023. The palace was not the last thing he would lose.

Andrew, who has spent years in the Epstein court file, kept a suite on the Chamber Floor of Buckingham Palace even after he stopped being a working royal. The palace was already in a decade-long renovation. Insiders said the closure of his office the year before had already made the suite pointless. After his divorce from Sarah Ferguson he had used the rooms as a bachelor pad. King Charles was not interested in hosting that arrangement inside the official royal residence.

Having already lost the palace job, Andrew then lost the living quarters. An anonymous source told The Sun in December 2022 that his stay at the palace was over, that he was not a working royal, and that he was on his own. Charles and William had already locked him off the Order of the Garter procession the previous June. The eviction was the next turn of the same screw.

Royal Lodge was supposed to be untouchable

The push did not stop at Buckingham Palace. For years Andrew clung to Royal Lodge, the 30-room Grade II-listed mansion in Windsor Great Park. He had held a 75-year lease from the Crown Estate since 2003, paying a reported £1 million up front plus at least £7.5 million in refurbishments for a peppercorn rent. That lease was the legal wall between him and a forced move.

The wall came down in autumn 2025. Virginia Giuffre died by suicide on April 24, 2025. Her posthumous memoir, published in October, restated the allegations Andrew has always denied. On October 17 he said he would stop using his titles. On October 30 Buckingham Palace announced that the King had initiated a formal process to remove the style, titles and honours of Prince Andrew, that he would be known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, and that notice had been served to surrender the Royal Lodge lease so he could move to “alternative private accommodation.” He was relocated toward Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate, the cottage where Thames Valley Police arrested him on February 19, 2026. After Easter 2026 he moved into Marsh Farm, a more permanent Sandringham exile house about a 20-minute walk from Wood Farm.

Stripped of the title of prince

Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm, dated November 3, 2025 and published in The Gazette on November 5, declared that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor would no longer hold “the style, title or attribute of ‘Royal Highness'” or “the titular dignity of ‘Prince.'” The Duke of York title was removed. On November 3 the royal family deleted his biography page from the official website. He remains eighth in the line of succession only because removing him would require an Act of Parliament and the agreement of the Commonwealth realms. Ministers have said they have no such legislation planned. On December 1, 2025, The Gazette recorded a further cut: the King cancelled Andrew’s 2006 appointment as a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter and directed that his name be erased from the register.

The first senior royal arrested in modern British history

On February 19, 2026 — Andrew’s 66th birthday — Thames Valley Police arrested him at Wood Farm on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Officers searched addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk. He was held for hours and released under investigation that evening. The arrest did not charge the Giuffre sexual-abuse allegations. It tracked emails in the U.S. Justice Department’s Epstein file release that appeared to show Andrew, while serving as the UK’s trade envoy around 2010, forwarding confidential visit reports to Jeffrey Epstein. The offence can carry a life maximum. No charges have been announced.

King Charles said he had learned the news “with the deepest concern” and that “the law must take its course.” Ghislaine Maxwell remains in a U.S. federal prison on a 20-year sentence. On August 25, 2026, Judge Paul Engelmayer denied her habeas petition as meritless and largely frivolous.

The last civic honour, the cottages, and an empty lodge

The titles were not the last thing to go. In April 2026 the City of London Corporation invited Andrew to relinquish the Freedom of the City, an honour he inherited through his father. He did not. On May 21 the Corporation censured him after that failure. By July 28 it was drawing up a process to strip the Freedom because, officials said, no mechanism currently existed to take it away. It is one of the last civic ornaments still attached to his name.

The house he left behind is now a public-accounts problem. A June 5, 2026 National Audit Office report found Andrew had been collecting rent on three cottages at Royal Lodge while he himself paid peppercorn rent on the 30-room mansion. The cottages have been vacant since April. In the first days of September 2026, reporting said the Crown Estate was looking for a new tenant for Royal Lodge — with the costly catch of security checks that come with a former royal residence.
