Baby Abuser Pedophile Commits Suicide in UK Prison

Convicted paedophile Jared Perry, 32, died in custody after being held at HMP Parc Prison in Bridgend, Wales. Perry, who was serving a 17-year extended sentence, had pleaded guilty to a string of sexual and indecent assaults on children, some under six months old. The case first came to light when Perry walked into Aberystwyth police station in 2018 and admitted the offences to officers; he was sentenced in January 2019.

Perry was found unresponsive in his cell at HMP Parc on 30 October 2019. He never regained consciousness and died at the Princess of Wales Hospital on 3 November 2019.

The circumstances surrounding Perry’s death led to an inquest at the Pontypridd Coroners’ Court, which examined what had occurred in the lead-up to his death. After a ten-day inquest, the jury reached a conclusion of «misadventure.» That verdict followed deliberation over the evidence presented, including the prison officers’ actions and timing.

The jury identified several failures within the prison system that it found had contributed to the death: a failure of staff to undertake the observations that had been indicated for Perry, a delay in transferring him to a secure mental health unit, and a failure to remove an item from his cell in line with procedure.

Perry’s mental health was a central thread of the inquest. The court heard that he had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, had been prescribed antidepressants from the age of 17, and that his condition deteriorated in custody — with one doctor stating he had presented as psychotic and needed a place in a secure psychiatric unit months before he died. He had been managed under the prison’s suicide and self-harm prevention procedures, known as ACCT, for much of his time at Parc. His mother told the inquest the family believed Perry had himself been abused as a child, which she said had a lasting impact on him.

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, an independent body whose stated purpose is to «make a significant contribution to safer, fairer custody and community supervision,» investigated the death and the circumstances leading up to it. Its findings set out the sequence of events and the prison’s policies and procedures around the management of at-risk prisoners.

The case prompted an Action Plan by HMP Parc to address the concerns raised. It included strengthening the ACCT process so that a properly resourced multidisciplinary team approach operates with adequate training for healthcare staff, and a weekly meeting between the Head of Safety and case managers to provide assurance in the process.

Self-harm and suicide remain major concerns across the prison estate. A systematic review published in The Lancet Psychiatry found that the strongest associations with self-harm in prison were with suicide-related antecedents, including current or recent suicidal ideation — the kind of risk factors that, identified early, are meant to trigger closer observation and care.

HMP Parc has remained under scrutiny in the years since. The Bridgend prison, run by the security firm G4S, saw a cluster of inmate deaths in 2024, several of them linked to the synthetic opioid nitazene, prompting an Ombudsman investigation, family protests outside the jail, and calls from MPs for the government to step in. Perry’s case sits within that wider record, underscoring continuing questions about observation, response times, and mental health support within the UK prison system.
