On June 26, 2024 he pleaded guilty in Saipan to one count of conspiring to obtain and disclose classified national-defense information. Judge Ramona Manglona sentenced him to time served — five years and two months — and he flew home to Australia to Stella and the boys. He is the first publisher convicted under the Espionage Act. Reporters Without Borders called the release overdue. Amnesty and the Committee to Protect Journalists warned the conviction is a weapon against any reporter who exposes the state. In October 2024 Assange told the Council of Europe he had “chosen freedom over unrealizable justice” and had “pleaded guilty to journalism.” Representatives James McGovern and Thomas Massie have urged a pardon.
