Israel Katz Named the Rafah Model in Lebanon as Satellites Show Razed Villages Behind a Yellow Line
Israel did not hide the analogy. Defense Minister Israel Katz said border villages in Lebanon would be destroyed « in accordance with the model used in Rafah and Beit Hanoun. » That is the vocabulary of Gaza’s demolition campaign spoken over a second country.
The 2026 war that opened on March 2 is not a sealed sequel. It is the same method — mass evacuation orders, airstrikes on infrastructure and health sites, journalists killed, homes bulldozed so families cannot return — dragged north across the Blue Line. Hours after Hezbollah launched rockets that day, the Israeli military issued forced evacuation orders for more than 100 Lebanese villages. CNN’s April satellite review found entire southern clusters flattened in the pattern rights groups already documented in Gaza. The New York Times interactive in May walked the same crater line. The Yellow Line Is a Border Drawn With Rubble
In Gaza the « yellow line » began as a temporary mark after a Trump-brokered ceasefire and hardened into an occupied belt. On April 18, 2026, the Israeli military announced the same device in southern Lebanon and said anyone approaching from the north was a threat. Al Jazeera noted it was the first time Israel used that phrase on Lebanese soil. The belt covers about 608 square kilometers, roughly 6 percent of Lebanese territory, and separates more than 50 towns from the rest of the country. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has talked about the Litani as a new border. Katz has floated holding ground indefinitely and blocking displaced Lebanese from going home while Hezbollah exists. Human Rights Watch and other monitors have already described infrastructure wreckage in Lebanon designed to prevent return. The World Bank put earlier reconstruction needs near $11 billion after the 2024 campaign that displaced more than a million people, nearly a fifth of the country. The 2026 offensive picked up the same ledger. Turkey called the ground operation part of « genocidal and collective punishment policies, this time in Lebanon. » Donald Trump, asked about the push, called Hezbollah « a big problem » being « rapidly eliminated » and said he had spoken to Israeli leaders. Weapons and diplomatic cover did not pause.
The Times of Israel quoted Katz saying all homes in Lebanese villages near the border would be destroyed to « remove, once and for all, the threats near the border, » and that the army would keep security control up to the Litani. Later remarks attributed to Katz on an Israeli podcast put numbers under the slogan: tens of thousands of homes and a claim that 90 percent of houses in targeted border villages had been taken down with bulldozers and explosives. A minister who says the quiet part is not confused. He is describing a buffer that only works if the people stay gone.
Gaza Is the Template, Not the Metaphor
In Gaza the death toll, the destruction of universities and hospitals, the engineered famine, and the refusal to allow a real return have already been named genocide by a growing roster of scholars, UN experts, and governments. Copying Rafah and Beit Hanoun in Tyre’s hinterland is how a genocidal method travels. Hezbollah’s rockets and the 2024 assassination campaign against its leadership are real facts. They do not license the erasure of civilian towns. « Buffer zone » is the word armies use when they intend to keep the people out. « Terror outpost » is the word they use when a kitchen wall is still standing.
Satellite work makes the argument harder to spin. Coastal Naqoura and southeastern Kfar Kila, already wrecked in 2024, were further demolished after families tried to go home. Towns north of the old contact line, including sites beyond the Litani, received new evacuation warnings even after a mid-April ceasefire was announced and then extended on paper. Ceasefire language and demolition language can coexist when one side writes both. The yellow line is the paperwork. The rubble is the policy.

Israel’s defenders will say Hezbollah embedded among civilians and that any army would clear the ground. That argument was used in Gaza until the ground itself disappeared. Embedding does not create a legal right to flatten 46 of 54 communities inside an occupation line and then forbid the residents from walking south. It does not create a right to import Gaza’s cartography and call it self-defense. The people who lived in those houses are not a military formation. They are the population the buffer is designed to erase from the map.
Journalists working the southern villages have described moonscapes where courtyards used to be. Democracy Now and other outlets recorded evacuation orders that reached towns north of the Litani, past the line Israel already occupies. Families who tried to return after earlier ceasefires found the return route treated as infiltration. That is how a temporary mark becomes a border. It is also how a genocide playbook is tested for export. If Rafah can be repeated in Tyre’s hinterland without a rupture in Washington or Brussels, the model is no longer an emergency measure. It is inventory.
