Georges St-Pierre Coached Elon Musk for One Night, Then Said the Zuckerberg Cage Fight Should Never Be Fought

Georges St-Pierre did not offer Elon Musk a slogan. He offered him a camp. The most decorated welterweight the UFC has produced told a man who runs car factories, rocket pads, and a social network that if the cage fight with Mark Zuckerberg was real, the coaching phone would be answered. Then, days after they actually rolled, St-Pierre went on ESPN and all but begged the spectacle to die. A fighter who has spent his adult life inside a fence looked at two of the richest men alive and said the fence was beneath them.

That contradiction is the part of the story that still matters. The proposed Musk-Zuckerberg match was treated for weeks in the summer of 2023 as a meme with a weigh-in. In June 2026, UFC chief executive Dana White sat at a post-fight press conference and said the negotiations had been a working deal, not a bit. « That was real, » White said. « I was literally in my backyard for two weeks negotiating that fight. » The venue they wanted was not a Vegas arena. It was the Colosseum.

The chain started with a product launch. Meta was preparing Threads, a text app aimed squarely at the platform Musk had bought and renamed. Musk answered the way he often answers a rival: in public, with a challenge. Zuckerberg, who had been training Brazilian jiu-jitsu in earnest and had just won an amateur tournament, did not laugh it off. He answered, in effect, with a location pin. The AEGIS Alliance traced that opening exchange in a report on how Mark Zuckerberg told Elon Musk to send him the location.

St-Pierre entered on June 24, 2023, not as a commentator but as available labor. The Quebec fighter, a two-division champion who retired with a reputation for making dangerous men look ordinary, wrote to Musk directly.

Musk did not hedge. On June 27 he answered with two fire emojis and four words that turned a fan note into a camp offer the public could screenshot.

What the public learned afterward is that the coaching was not hypothetical. St-Pierre told ESPN MMA, in an interview published in early July 2023, that he had already trained with Musk. He described a man stronger than average, tough, and carrying a judo background St-Pierre had not expected. « He has my number, » St-Pierre said, and he repeated that if Musk needed help he would make himself available. The same breath held the cold shower. Musk, he argued, spends his time on work that can change the fate of humanity, and a man in that position is too precious to climb into a cage for an audience. Skill, St-Pierre has always said, beats heart. Zuckerberg already had years of mat time. Musk had a night with a legend and a calendar that does not belong to a fight camp.

John Danaher, the grappling coach who watched the same session, drew the same line in a conversation with Lex Fridman. Musk impressed them by how fast he found the problem inside a technique. The proposed opponent still had the hours. Danaher’s conclusion was not a prediction of a finish. It was a wish that both men would go back to the work that had made them famous. Fridman, who had posted a training highlight with Zuckerberg and said he would train Musk too, became the polite middle of a feud that was never polite. Maye Musk, Elon’s mother, was blunter on June 22, 2023. She told people to stop encouraging the match, then joked that she had canceled it herself and simply had not informed the principals.

Zuckerberg’s side of the preparation was not a costume. He had been drilling jiu-jitsu with serious coaches, competing, and posting the work. Friends in the sport described a hobby that had turned into a second discipline. That is why the challenge landed differently on him than it did on Musk. One man was already living inside a rule set. The other was collecting credentials: judo as a teenager, talk of taekwondo and karate, a late burst of interest once a rival said yes. St-Pierre’s night on the mat confirmed the athletic raw material. It did not manufacture the months of sparring a cage fight requires.

By the middle of August 2023 the public version collapsed in the place Meta wanted the conversation to live. On August 13, Zuckerberg wrote on Threads that he was moving on. Musk, he said, was not serious. Musk answered by calling him a chicken and citing a back problem that would need surgery. Each man kept the story in which the other had flinched. Dana White, who had spent those weeks as the only person in the middle with a clipboard, later described the practical cracks: weight, rules, and the simple fact that a fight is a date on a calendar, not a thread.

The Colosseum detail is what separates White’s 2026 retelling from the joke the internet remembered. Speaking after a UFC card in Las Vegas, around the time he was also promoting a show on the White House lawn, White said he had been on calls with the Italian government. The ancient stadium, he said, wanted on the order of $150 million, not as a rental invoice but as money paid into a fund for restoring other historic sites. « Those two were gonna put up the money for the Colosseum, » he told reporters. For a while, he said, he was having a blast talking to both camps every day. Then it fell apart. His closer was an open bid dressed up as a shrug: anybody who wants to fund a UFC show inside the Colosseum, he is in. He had previously picked Zuckerberg to win, in language that did not require a judge’s scorecard.

Forbes noted the timing. The comments came about a week after White had been selling UFC Freedom 250, a mixed martial arts event staged on the White House lawn and reported to have cost about $60 million. Rome wanted more than twice that, and it wanted the money aimed at stone, not at a broadcast truck. The richest possible main event on earth still could not clear a ruin’s price and a training calendar at the same time. Spectacle found a cheaper lawn in Washington. It never found a cage in the place where Romans once sold a crowd the same product.

A rumor in April 2024 tried to staple the feud onto another celebrity card, the Mike Tyson and Jake Paul show, as if the billionaires might appear as a co-main. That talk died the way the original died. The AEGIS Alliance looked at how the dolphin-joke version of a Zuckerberg-Musk co-main evaporated once the real bout, Tyson against Paul, and the injury that followed, took the calendar back. St-Pierre’s name kept floating through those rewrites as the coach who had said yes. The yes was real. The fight was not.

White’s backyard calls explain the other half. Promoters do not spend two weeks on conference calls with a foreign government for a punchline. The $150 million figure is not a number White invented in 2026 to sound busy. He attached it to a restoration fund and to the only two people who could have written the check without calling a bank. When he says the deal was real, the credible reading is that the money and the monument were discussed in detail, and that the bodies were not. A cage fight fails in the body first. Everything else is posters.

Nothing since has revived it. Musk and Zuckerberg have found other stages, other products, and other insults. Threads shipped. X kept its owner. Zuckerberg stayed on the mats as a private athlete rather than a pay-per-view headliner. Musk stayed inside companies that do not allow a six-week camp without the companies noticing. St-Pierre went back to the life of a retired champion who can still fill a room by describing one night of training. White went back to actual cards, including the strange project of putting a cage on a presidential lawn, which at least had fighters who had already made weight for a living.

The footage of the almost-fight is mostly other people’s training. Zuckerberg on the mat. Fridman’s highlight. St-Pierre, calm, explaining why admiration is not a game plan. White, years later, still a little delighted that Rome picked up the phone. The missing tape is the one that would have settled it: a contract, a weight cut, and a cage. Georges St-Pierre was ready to build the fighter. He was also the first famous person in the room to say the fighter should stay at his desk. On that point, history took his corner.

More on the feud, the sport, and the men who sell both sits in U.S. news coverage from The AEGIS Alliance.
