CDC Tied EVALI to Vitamin E Acetate in Illicit THC Carts. The AHA’s Quit Lying Campaign Kept Blaming Nicotine Vapes

The CDC found the EVALI outbreak’s fingerprint in November 2019: vitamin E acetate, almost always in illicit THC carts. Lung-fluid samples from 29 patients showed THC in 23 of them. Every sample had vitamin E acetate. Nicotine showed up in 16. The agency did not even test for CBD. Standard nicotine e-liquid is not oil-based. You do not get lipoid pneumonia from vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol.
Cable news still led with « vaping. » CNN buried the CDC finding at the bottom of a UK scare piece three days later. That is how a black-market thickener became a war on adult smokers.
The American Heart Association’s « Quit Lying » campaign claimed vaping causes heart attacks. Professor Brad Rodu showed that in Stanton Glantz’s paper, most of the 38 patients had their heart attacks about ten years before they started vaping. The AHA also claimed vapor leaches nickel, tin, and lead. Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos calculated you would have to vape more than 100 milliliters a day — a physically absurd amount — to blow past FDA daily-metal limits. The Johns Hopkins metals paper counted 17,000 breaths as if they were puffs. A vaper takes 400 to 600 puffs a day. Retractions never make the headline.
Quit Lying used « Big Vape » the way activists use « Big Tobacco, » then skipped the fact that most independent e-liquid has nothing to do with cigarette companies. A Juul pod can last as long as a pack; lungs also absorb less nicotine from vapor than from combusted tobacco because vapor does not lacerate tissue the way smoke does. I, Kyle James Lee, switched from cigarettes more than seven years before that campaign and have not bought a pack since. Flavors are why adult smokers stay off cigarettes. Ban the flavors and they go back — or they go to the same street market that made EVALI.
The AHA, Bloomberg-funded shops, and pharma have always had more money in this fight than the vape counter at a strip mall. The UK kept using e-cigarettes as a quit-smoking tool. The FDA spent years building a PMTA wall only cigarette companies could climb. On May 5, 2026 that same FDA authorized four Glas pods, including non-tobacco Gold and Sapphire flavors, and then posted guidance letting more unauthorized flavored products sit on shelves under enforcement discretion. The panic did not survive contact with the evidence. The cigarette death toll did.
