California Child Sex Crimes Sweep Arrests 141 People in Seven Days Across Five Counties, and the Task Force Has Not Slowed Down

California authorities announced they had arrested 141 people in seven days in a crackdown they named Operation Protect the Innocent. Sixty-four agencies worked five counties. The Los Angeles Regional Internet Crimes Against Children task force ran it from September 6 to September 12, 2022.

The LAPD said the goal was to work CyberTips, identify suspects, and check people already on probation or parole. Detectives served warrants at homes in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. Of the 141 arrests, 110 were tied to child-sexual-abuse-material offenses. The rest included pimping, statutory rape, child sex abuse, and parole violations. An arrest is a charge, not a conviction. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Officials told parents to watch who their children talk to online. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s NetSmartz program is still the standard free curriculum. NCMEC also runs the CyberTipline and the Take It Down tool for getting a minor’s explicit image off the internet. Sextortion — a predator who coaxes an image, then threatens to leak it unless the child sends money or more images — has kept climbing on those same channels.

The same task force, a larger net

The Los Angeles Regional ICAC Task Force did not treat 141 arrests as a one-off. Between April 6 and April 19, 2025, the same five counties were the grid for «Operation Spring Cleaning.» Investigators arrested 265 alleged child predators and said they rescued 27 children. Phase one was undercover work on social platforms. Phase two was residential and arrest warrants for production and distribution of CSAM, online exploitation, and trafficking.

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said the point was to pull predators off the internet and pull children out of abuse. Officials noted many of the 265 suspects «held positions of trust» and worked jobs that put them next to children. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said the operation’s name was too gentle. Some of the 2025 arrests were tied to 764, an online exploitation network known for coercing children into producing explicit material and harming themselves. More than 108 agencies took part. About 1,000 parents and children sat through internet-safety training next to the enforcement work.

A federal week with the same target

In early May 2025 the Justice Department and FBI announced Operation Restore Justice: five days, all 55 FBI field offices, 205 arrests, 115 children recovered. Several of those arrests were in California. Charges included production, distribution, and possession of CSAM, online enticement, transportation of minors, and child sex trafficking.
