Subaru Showed a Forester in Singapore Whose Trim Name Spelled an F-Bomb. Detroit Disavowed It

Forester Ultimate Customised Kit Special

SUBARU — The plate under the Forester at the 2020 Singapore Motor Show read Ultimate Customized Kit Special. The acronym is F.U.C.K.S. Twitter did the rest.

It was not a factory trim for the United States. Motor Image Group, Subaru’s independent distributor across nine Asian markets including Singapore, built the show car. Subaru of America sent dealers an apology letter calling it an «unfortunate situation» and stressing that Subaru of America and Subaru Corporation «had nothing to do with this.» The parent company had the nameplate pulled while the show was still running. The naming, it said, «in no way reflects the values and standards we hold true.» American buyers were told, bluntly, they would not be getting one.

Snopes later confirmed the car was real. It sat next to a Forester e-Boxer, a Forester GT, a refreshed Impreza, and the Viziv Adrenaline Concept, and it got more cameras than all of them. Under the joke wrap: royal blue with red accents, 20-inch Enkei wheels, dark suede-leather, red stitching, STI badges on the seats and shifter. Reviewers who got past the letters called it a head-turner. Whether it was a translation accident or accidental viral marketing, it did what polished campaigns rarely do — put one Forester in front of millions of people.

The AEGIS Alliance files it with the rest of Odd News, next to the Sandusky salon that survived a zoning fight over its name.
