Western governments have spent two years insisting they support speech while they criminalize the speech that names Israel’s war on Gaza as a genocide. Hassan is useful to that project because she is elected, Palestinian, and unwilling to sand the nouns. She is also useful because she is visible. A backbench activist can be ignored. An MEP on a boarding-pass list has to be processed in public, which is how the processing becomes the message.

Canada has not published the classified annex that would let voters test the security claim. Until that annex exists, the public record is simple. A French-Palestinian lawmaker was invited to talk about censorship. The invitation was treated as a threat. Israeli soldiers were not. The conferences went ahead with a screen where a person should have been. Hassan has said she will sue. Suits take years. The empty chair took one night.

Hassan’s own biography is the part Canadian officials would rather keep off the form. She is a lawyer who entered the European Parliament in 2024 with a platform that named occupation, siege, and now genocide. She is not a tourist. Treating her as an undeclared risk because Israel already banned her is circular. The ban becomes the evidence for the next ban.
