Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, 57, is charged with first-degree murder in the June 1, 2025, shooting. A grand jury indicted him on November 17, 2025. A February 2026 trial setting collapsed because both sides were still reading discovery. A May 13, 2026, setting moved again. He appeared on June 29, 2026, in the 437th District Court before Judge Joel Perez. Court records and the San Antonio Express-News now point to September 17, 2026, as the next date.

Joss, 59, and his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, had married on Valentine’s Day 2025. They went back to the 200 block of Dorsey Drive, near Pleasanton Road, to pick up mail at the shell of the house that burned on January 23. Three dogs died in that fire. Joss first called it an accident, then wondered if someone had come inside.

De Gonzales says Alvarez walked up, shouted homophobic slurs, lifted a gun from his lap, and fired. A witness told police Alvarez parked behind their car, argued, threatened to shoot, and used a rifle. After he was detained he told an officer, “I shot him.” That admission is in the police paper. It is not a completed trial.

Attorney Nico LaHood’s firm, LaHood Norton Goss, now represents Alvarez. Former counsel Alfonso Otero said the client “maintains his innocence.” The defense has talked about self-defense and Texas law on defense of self and third persons. It has denied the slur. Prosecutor Neil Cordero has told the court the state is still evaluating the case. Defense attorney Jason Goss said in May that the witness list already ran between forty and sixty people and that he believed there were more. The packet includes about sixty-three police reports from a South Side block that logged more than sixty calls in two years.

Texas does not file a standalone hate-crime count. A bias finding would be a punishment enhancement after a conviction. San Antonio police first said there was “no evidence whatsoever” that sexual orientation played a role. Chief William McManus later walked it back and apologized. He said the department spoke too early and that the question remains part of the investigation. That retraction is now part of the public record. A finding is not.

That is the cultural hole. The legal hole is whether a neighborhood war that already produced a fire, dead animals on the lot, and a stack of police calls gets tried as a hate killing or as a self-defense shooting. Alvarez is out on $200,000 bond with house-arrest conditions and no firearms. If convicted he faces up to life. He is presumed innocent until a jury says otherwise.

The AEGIS Alliance has no interest in flattening this into a celebrity obituary that forgets the husband at the mailbox. De Gonzales has been consistent about the slurs. The defense has been consistent about self-defense. Police undercut their own first statement. Those three facts can sit in the same article without a pundit picking a winner fifteen months early.
