Washington now has two Christopher Columbus monuments doing different jobs. One is a fenced marble replica on the Eisenhower Executive Office Building lawn, loaned through the end of the presidential term. The other is a 1912 fountain at Union Station that sat dry from 2007 until a ribbon-cutting this spring. Neither object is a history lesson. Both are scenery for the 250th anniversary of independence.

Workers lowered the 13-foot, roughly one-ton replica onto the north side of the Eisenhower building over the weekend of March 21 and 22, 2026, before most of Pennsylvania Avenue was awake. White House spokesman Davis Ingle said that in this White House Columbus is a hero whose life the administration intends to honor “for generations to come.” Italian American Organizations United owns the piece and loaned it for the rest of the term. The pedestal reads like a campaign flyer carved in stone: dedicated in 1984, “Destroyed July 4, 2020,” “Resurrected 2022,” and “Rededicated by President Donald J. Trump, October 13, 2025.” 卫报 把最后一行绑在上个秋天的"哥伦布日"公告上 而不是任何新打开的档案里

The marble on the executive lawn sits behind fencing. The public version of the same argument is Columbus Circle, in front of Union Station. On May 28, 2026, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Italian Ambassador Marco Peronaci, Spanish Ambassador Ángeles Moreno Bau, and Andrew Giuliani cut a ribbon on a restoration that put water back in the Christopher Columbus Memorial Fountain for the first time since 2007. The 内政部 called the plaza a “historic front door” and credited five months of stone work, new plumbing, and safer walkways. The National Italian American Foundation put the price at $11.8 million, inside a wider Park Service push of more than $54 million to repair seven District fountains before July 4.
The fountain is older than the fight people think they are having. Daniel Burnham designed the circle. Lorado Taft sculpted the memorial. It was dedicated in 1912, a 45-foot shaft under a globe, with figures for the Old World and the New. It went dry in the George W. Bush years and stayed dry through three presidents. Turning the water back on is maintenance dressed as a culture-war win. Burgum’s line, that the circle welcomes the public again because of the president, converts a plumbing job into a loyalty test. A Washington Times column on September 22 treated the fountain and the Eisenhower replica as one romance between the president and the explorer. The column is commentary. The pairing is still the point: one Columbus behind a fence, one Columbus in front of the trains.

The same months filled the Rose Garden, now a stone patio off the Oval Office, with life-size bronze. George Washington was already there, a piece that had stood at the Washington Monument. In March, Alexander Hamilton and Benjamin Franklin arrived. “Freedom’s Charge,” two Revolutionary War soldiers by Chas Fagan, joined them. In July, a seated Thomas Jefferson with a quill and a draft of the Declaration, sculpted by George Lundeen of Loveland, Colorado, became the fifth. 纽约时报 和 美联社 将集群视为经批准的祖先的花园,而不是联邦铸币局的新委托.

The White House did not need to buy a new Jefferson. It needed someone who already owned the right bronzes and was willing to park them where cameras point. Edward Lengel, former chief historian of the White House Historical Association, told the Times in March that the grounds were being turned into a partisan battleground. By late summer the battleground had a donor label.
A larger National Garden of American Heroes, a promised field of 250 statues in West Potomac Park, has been slowed by a preservation lawsuit. The lawn and the plaza became the substitute gallery. When a planned monument park cannot clear a courtroom, the presidency installs a smaller one that does not have to. That is not curation. It is impatience with any process that might say no.
书本的航行平平了
Columbus sailed west in 1492 and reached islands in the Caribbean: Guanahani, which he renamed San Salvador, then Cuba and Hispaniola. He made four crossings. He never set a boot on the continental landmass that became the United States. John Cabot, sailing for England, reached that mainland in 1497. Norse crews under Leif Erikson had already spent a winter in Newfoundland around the year 1000. Nations indigenous to the hemisphere had been living there for millennia before any of those keels arrived. Columbus died insisting he had found a western approach to Asia. The people he met were called Indians because of that mistake, and the mistake was written into maps, sermons, and later into American civics.
The tidy “discovery of America” is a 19th-century civic product. Italian American communities, facing Protestant suspicion and lynchings in the late 1800s, had a reason to want a heroic ancestor in the schoolbook. The 1892 Columbian Exposition sold them one. An item that year in Michigan’s Owosso Times already mocked the “Columbus Canard.” Usefulness is not the same thing as a landing. Pride in the people who later built parishes, unions, and city machines in Baltimore, Boston, and New York does not require a false footfall in North America, and it does not require silence about Hispaniola. 2025年10月,美国 哥伦布日公告 called him “the original American hero” and “a giant of Western civilization,” and it promised to pull the holiday back from people the text called arsonists. The marble is that paragraph with a fence around it. On Hispaniola, Columbus and his brothers ran a colony that demanded gold. Taíno communities that missed the quota were punished with mutilation, enslavement, and killing. Bartolomé de las Casas, a priest of the same generation who began as a participant in the conquest and became its accuser, described forced labor, the sexual exploitation of women and girls, and a population collapse driven by violence and disease. Columbus was arrested in 1500 and sent back to Spain in chains after complaints about how he governed. Rival Spaniards had their own motives. The pattern of coercion is not a modern invention. 鼻涕虫 已经奠定了主源 战斗没有磨损边缘。
That is why demonstrators in Baltimore pulled the 1984 Little Italy monument down on July 4, 2020, during the protests after the murder of George Floyd, and threw it into the Inner Harbor. Divers brought up fragments. The replica now facing the avenue was rebuilt in the studio of sculptor Tilghman Hemsley, mixing recovered stone with new marble, and it sat for years because Baltimore would not put it back. Maryland lobbyist John Pica, who leads the owner group, said the statue had finally found a place where it could stand protected. Protection, here, means a federal fence and a temporary loan. It does not mean the documents changed.
Cities that replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day were answering that record. The White House answered the cities. A government that needs a sanitized explorer to underwrite a patriotic summer is telling on itself. The anniversary can honor people who actually built the country, including the nations who were already here and the immigrants who arrived centuries later, without pretending a Caribbean landfall was a mainland discovery.
The loan expires with the term. The fountain will keep running after the lawn sculpture is trucked away, or it will not, depending on who holds the Interior Department. The Taíno record does not expire. A statue that advertises its own resurrection is doing religious work for a political faction. Destroyed, resurrected, rededicated: that is a liturgy, and liturgies are not required to be true. History that cannot survive the ship’s logs and las Casas is scenery. Washington spent the anniversary year installing scenery, then asked the country to call it memory.
