Seattle police had already ruled April 5, 1994 a suicide: shotgun, note, house in Seattle. The federal file is not a homicide investigation. It is letters. Two redacted writers, citing Nick Broomfield’s Kurt & Courtney, the book Who Killed Kurt Cobain?, and a private investigator, asked the Bureau to treat the death as murder. In August 2026 the investigative project Who Killed Kurt unearthed a letter from Courtney Love’s lawyer, written about a year and a half after the death, asking Seattle police to hand over the entire investigative file — originals, no copies left at the department — and close the matter. The letter said Love and the estate accepted the suicide finding. The department refused, citing its duty to keep public records. Retired captain Mike Low told NewsNation he had never seen a request like it in 50 years of police work. The New York Post and NewsNation ran it as exclusive fuel for an argument that was never cold.
