Former Las Vegas cop convicted of stealing almost $165,000 from casinos
A former Nevada cop from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department may face a lifetime behind bars subsequent to being found guilty of robbing casino establishments on three separate occasions, swindling a total of more than $150,000.
A federal jury found Caleb Rogers, who is 35 years old, guilty on Friday, July 14, of three charges of obstruction of business by theft and one charge of displaying a weapon during and in connection to a violent crime. The charge related to the weapon carries the highest possible punishment of life imprisonment, the Associated Press reported.
His brother allegedly gave evidence against Caleb Rogers’ during the court proceeding and stated that he accompanied Rogers in the initial robbery, but not in the next two. The prosecution purportedly contended during the trial that Rogers was heavily indebted and had a gambling addiction.
According to the U.S. attorney’s office for the district of Nevada, Rogers looted the initial gambling establishment in western Las Vegas on November 21, 2021, and purloined $73,810, and the second one in the north area of Las Vegas on January 6, 2023. He seized $11,500 on that occasion. The U.S. attorney’s office stated that throughout those two heists, he “walked directly to the casino’s cashier cage and demanded money from the cashiers,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada indicated.
The third robbery took place on February 27th, 2022. In the course of that event, he allegedly rushed towards two casino workers in the sports betting section and shouted, “Get away from the money. I’ve got a gun. I will shoot you!'”
He shoved a cashier down onto the ground prior to seizing $78,898.
Workers activated the casino’s alarm, then Rogers escaped in the direction of the parking area. Security personnel took him to the ground, but Rogers produced a firearm and made threats that he’d shoot him. Additional security showed up and managed to seize his gun.
Las Vegas cops reached the location and apprehended Rogers. The officers inspected the identification number on his handgun and discovered it was the property of the police department.
Rogers is facing a maximum of two decades for every charge of commerce obstruction by robbery.
