Mormon church sued for allegedly covering up decades of Boy Scouts sex abuse in Arizona

(The AEGIS Alliance) – Lawsuits have been filed against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for sexual abuse done to Boy Scouts. There are a total of seven lawsuits for the seven individuals that were affected. According to records, the troops would report the incidents to bishops. However, bishops would overlook this and those accused of the sexual abuse would remain in their roles at the church.

“The claim that the church has had access to the BSA ineligible volunteer files for many decades is simply false,” Church spokesman Sam Penrod said in a statement. “The church learned about the details of those files at the same time as the general public. These claims will be carefully evaluated and appropriately addressed.”

The victims are asking for a sum of money to cover pain, suffering, and medical expenses. All lawsuits have been filed in Arizona. The Boy Scouts and the Mormon church have long been affiliated with each other until recent times. Ninety thousand claims of sexual abuse have been filed. Victims have a timeframe to sue. Lawmakers allow them to sue up until their thirtieth birthday.

The alleged sexual abuse incidents date from 1972 to 2009. More lawsuits were filed on Monday against local Boy Scout leaders.

“The church must be held accountable in order to bring healing and closure to Mormon victims of childhood sexual abuse,” Hurley McKenna & Mertz, a law firm that focuses on church sex abuse, said in a statement.
