It closed the file because the people investigators named as suspects were already dead. Deputy Carly Cappetto told The Seattle Times the quiet part in plain language: “We’re going to be closing this case because we don’t have anyone to charge.” That sentence is the real ending of a New Year’s Eve welfare check that began with a smell at the door and ended with two bodies in a garage freezer and two more upstairs.

The AEGIS Alliance is less interested in the first-day word “tragic” than in the mechanics of a house that kept a secret from July into December. William Vosler, 68, and Eileen Vosler, 66, were stabbed to death and stored. Their son Shane Vosler, 33, and his girlfriend Sue Bin Lee, 34, were later found shot. The medical examiner’s clock and the sheriff’s clock do not describe a single bad night. They describe time, concealment, and a county that had already been asked to look.

What the doorway actually contained

On December 31, 2024, relatives who had stopped hearing from the household met deputies at a house in the 18900 block of Eastwood Avenue East, in the Hillsboro at Silver Creek development between South Hill and Graham. The house was built in 2015. It was not a remote cabin. Two of William and Eileen’s other sons got inside by pulling a second-floor air-conditioning unit out of the wall. One of them saw a woman dead on the floor, covered in blood. A deputy who followed “smelled a distinct odor of body decomposition,” in the account carried by KOMO News.

Lee was upstairs. Shane Vosler was behind a locked bathroom door, also upstairs. In a freezer-fridge unit in the garage were his parents, already far past the first hours of death. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled William’s and Eileen’s deaths homicides. William died from a stab wound to the chest and blunt force trauma to the head. Eileen died from multiple stab wounds. Published accounts differ on the map of her wounds: KING 5 and KOMO described stab wounds to the chest and neck, while The Seattle Times described wounds to the head and neck. Both parents were killed. Shane died from a contact gunshot wound to the head, ruled a suicide. Lee died from a gunshot wound to the head. Her manner of death stayed undetermined.

Cappetto added a sequencing detail that flattens the idea that everyone died together. Everybody in the household died on a different timetable, she said, and the son was the last. Lee “had clearly been deceased longer” than Shane when the bodies were found. Detectives described evidence that the younger pair had “collaborated” on their own deaths. Collaboration is not a completed answer to who held the gun for Lee. Cappetto told the Times it was “hard to say,” from the angle of the wound, whether she shot herself or was shot by him.

Washington authorities have released the identities and causes of death for the four people found inside a home on New Year's Eve, two of whom were found inside a freezer in the garage. https://t.co/Ah51PVk2oD

— WTHR.com (@WTHRcom) January 14, 2025

July 24, written down and left in the kitchen

The notes refuse to behave like a sudden rupture. On a leaking kitchen refrigerator, investigators found paper that read “Time of Death July 24th 5:45 AM” and “Time of death July 24th 3:00 PM.” KING 5 reported that more notes about time of death were on the freezer in the garage. The Tacoma News Tribune placed those dates two days after Eileen’s birthday. Someone did not merely kill two people. Someone recorded the hour, twice, and stored the record next to an ordinary kitchen failure.

The sheriff’s office later said the evidence showed Shane and Lee killed William and Eileen in the summer of 2024 and then lived in the house for about six months with the bodies in the freezer. Cappetto’s line was blunt: the son and his girlfriend were living in that home for six months before any of this was discovered. Neighbors told local stations that William used to work on cars in the driveway and that the routine stopped in July. A driveway is a public clock. When it stops, the absence is visible to anyone who walks past the same house. Absence was not treated as an emergency until winter.

Detectives seized a handgun and a shotgun, along with phones. They did not publish a motive. Shane is the named suspect in the homicides of his parents. Whether Lee helped kill them, helped afterward, or both, was never charged because she was dead. A November writing tied to her online profile has been described in some coverage as a farewell. Investigators did not substitute a blog post for an autopsy. The News Tribune reconstructed a relationship that began years earlier in online games, and friends who spoke after the deaths described a son who would not talk about what his father thought of that relationship. Those interviews are a social history. They are not a charging document, and this newsroom will not pretend they are.

Four requests, and a deputy who left

KOMO’s reconstruction of the welfare-check history is the civic part of the story, and it is worse than the freezer. The sheriff’s office received four requests to check on William and Eileen after they were last seen. On December 23, a neighbor asked for a check after watching William’s newer truck get towed. A deputy went to the house, saw no forced entry, got no answer, and left. Two more checks followed without anyone forcing the door. Only on December 31 did family members remove an air conditioner and make the interior unavoidable.

That sequence should embarrass the idea that a welfare check is a safety net. It is a visit. If nobody answers and the windows look intact, the visit ends. The people inside this house were not intact. A practice that requires a broken window before a deputy walks in will miss every death that happens behind a locked, undamaged door. The sons who pulled the air conditioner did the thing the earlier visits declined to do. A December 23 entry would not have saved William and Eileen. It might have ended months of concealment before two more people died upstairs.

The AEGIS Alliance has watched the same last-alarm pattern in other files. A child with cerebral palsy starved after caregivers were later accused of neglect. A special-needs girl in Arizona died after she was locked in a cage. Different states, different charges, the same habit of treating “we have not seen them” as a scheduling note until a body answers.

The identities and cause of death have been released for the four people found dead inside a Pierce County home on New Year's Eve. https://t.co/hmQjQKsIaH

— First Coast News (@FCN2go) January 13, 2025

An undetermined manner is not a closed question

Closing a case because there is no defendant is a prosecutor’s logic. It is not a public-records logic. Cause and manner of death do not explain why a freezer was chosen, why the times were written down, why earlier checks found nothing wrong from the curb, or why Lee’s manner of death remains blank while Shane’s is labeled suicide. Cappetto said the medical examiner’s report matched what detectives were already leaning toward. Matching a lean is not the same as publishing the evidence. A fuller file would still include toxicology, the order of the December gunshots, every note, and a plain statement of what puts a knife in whose hand in July. None of that creates a trial. It creates a record that does not depend on the first neighbor willing to speak to a camera. The sheriff’s office asked the public not to fill the gaps with rumor. That request is fair. It becomes unfair if silence is then treated as the finished product.

People living with violence, or afraid a relative has vanished into a house that stopped answering, can reach the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233. People in immediate emotional crisis in the United States can call or text 988.

Concealment is the crime the headline keeps shrinking

A stabbing can be narrated as a moment. Six months of living with the people you killed cannot. The freezer slows the smell and lets a garage stay a garage to anyone who does not open the lid. The notes fix a story of when death happened, in someone’s handwriting, before a medical examiner arrives. Together they describe planning, which is the opposite of the language that usually arrives in the first briefing.

The AEGIS Alliance will keep this address attached to documents: a medical examiner’s rulings, a spokesperson who said the case would close, a December 23 visit that ended at the door, and paper dated July 24. The national press treated the freezer as the spectacle. The spectacle was real. The more durable fact is that a county can be asked four times to look at a house and still need a family member with an air conditioner pulled out of a wall before the inside becomes official.

Readers who follow how this newsroom handles cases that institutions would rather finish in a paragraph can start with crime news, U.S. news, and what happens when a double homicide is left to official summaries.
