Steve Hilton opened October by asking California voters to treat a bedroom wink as a civic duty. Just Try It, California puts two young women on a bed under a Pride flag, uses language that sounds like a first sexual encounter, and reveals a mail ballot for him instead of Xavier Becerra. By the weekend his Golden Ticket was calling it creepy, a pastor who still wants him elected was calling the idea reprobate, and the polling gap had not moved.

What Steve Hilton’s Just Try It California ad actually stages

The ad, posted October 1, is not an argument about rent, gas, or schools. It is a dare dressed as seduction. One woman says she cannot believe she is doing this and asks what happens if her father finds out. The other tells her to close her eyes and says she will do all the work. The camera drops to a ballot marked for Hilton. Then comes the line that made allied Republicans flinch. Now lick it. The script pretends that means an envelope.

Just Try It, California.

Hilton posted it as Just try it, California. The New York Times described Gen Z women, a Pride flag, and a sexually suggestive double-entendre about sealing a mail ballot. HuffPost noted that one woman wears a shirt reading RESIST. The target is not the base that already knows his name. It is a younger voter he thinks can be teased into a Republican column if the tease borrows queer intimacy and then yanks the rug.

Steve Hilton built the closing month of his California governor campaign around a one-minute dare, not a plan for rent, gas, or schools.

The bet is stranger because Trump has endorsed him, and Hilton has campaigned on costs, schools, and borders. In a separate interview he discussed that endorsement beside energy prices and classroom rules. Just Try It mentions none of it. Marking his name is treated as the dangerous act, as if the risk is a parent finding a ballot.

Michael Gates and Sonja Shaw break with the Golden Ticket

The Golden Ticket was supposed to look like a slate, not a solo stunt. The Orange County Register described it linking Hilton with attorney general candidate Michael Gates, lieutenant governor candidate Gloria Romero, and controller candidate Herb Morgan. Gates had campaigned beside Hilton. He was not warned.

Gates wrote that his campaign was neither consulted nor alerted. He emphatically denounced the use of young women as a political tool and called the video an example of the inappropriate sexualization of young people. Californians, he said, deserve a serious alternative to decades of failed leadership in Sacramento, and this film was not it.

Sonja Shaw, the Republican running for state superintendent and a Chino Valley Unified board member, named the party. She told Hilton, the California Republican Party, and chairwoman Corrin Rankin to be ashamed for cheering what she called creepy, weird, disturbing garbage. She wrote that the spot is why good people leave the Republican Party, and that as a mother focused on children she believed a line had been crossed.

Shaw objected because the script leans on a father’s discovery and on young women being coaxed. Gates called the same choice a parental-rights breach. They needed the top of the ticket to look disciplined while ballots were already moving. Newsweek put the fight in the final month, after the September 30 debate in which Becerra tied Hilton to Trump. A joke about an envelope does not answer a tax question. It tells the rest of the slate they are expendable.

Steve Hilton’s apology video still sells the ad as genius

On Saturday, October 3, Hilton posted a vertical video about the reaction. He said the response was overwhelmingly positive, that offense was never intended, and that it grieved him. He gets it, he said, and he asked for grace. The campaign would do things supporters love and things they may not.

In his October 3 video, Steve Hilton said he understood why people were offended, then left the Just Try It ad online.

The provocation stayed up. The New York Times reported that he still circulated the compliment he wanted remembered. People have told him it is genius. Earlier he had said a provocative, humorous point is often what the best communication does. Humor an attorney general candidate has to disown is not a message.

Rep. Robert Garcia of Long Beach called the spot bizarre and desperate. Hilton, he said, has attacked LGBTQ communities, stands with Donald Trump, and cared more about what Garcia called AI slop than about life in California. State Democratic Party chairman Rusty Hicks condemned the ad too. Becerra spokesman Jonathan Underland called it MAGA noticing a sellout willing to drop his own values. The line is self-serving. It also fits a campaign that polices gender and then rents a Pride flag for a punchline.

Hilton told viewers the reaction was overwhelmingly positive and that people had called the suggestive spot genius.

Jack Hibbs calls the Hilton ad grotesque and keeps his endorsement

Pastor Jack Hibbs of Calvary Chapel Chino Hills went further and still ended on a vote. On a Facebook Live that the Orange County Register covered on October 3, he called the ad grotesque and said it promoted lesbianism among college girls and some high school girls, which he cast as a pandemic of social ill. Anyone who thought it was fine was sick, he said, and anyone who sexualizes people for a vote is what the Bible calls a reprobate. Then he told followers to back Hilton anyway, because he would not trust Xavier Becerra to clean out his garage.

Michael Gates, Hilton’s Golden Ticket partner in the attorney general race, said the campaign never warned him about the ad.

That is the California Republican coalition in one weekend. A pastor pathologizes queer women, insults the candidate who staged them, and still tells people to vote for him. Spencer Pratt scolded the critics and said the panic is why Republicans lose. Former chairwoman Jessica Millan Patterson said the ad was not aimed at her. Fred Karger, the first out gay Republican to run for president, in 2012, called the targeting hypocritical and put that audience near a 1 percent chance of voting for Hilton.

Clever for whom? Not for the women used as a costume, and not for LGBTQ Californians watching this faction demand limits on gender-affirming care for minors and on school sports. Hilton’s answer is a technicality. He has said the ad does not conflict with those beliefs because the limits would apply only to people who are not adults. The worry about a father finding out makes that dodge thin. A campaign does not get to wink at queer adulthood and then treat queer youth as a threat.

Why Xavier Becerra’s polling lead did not move

September surveys show a race no viral dare was going to fix. A UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll of 4512 likely voters, taken September 15 to 20, put Becerra at 58 percent and Hilton at 33. August had been 55 to 37. SurveyUSA had Becerra leading 55 to 33. The Public Policy Institute of California, with 1103 likely voters from September 4 to 10, had Becerra at 60 and Hilton at 38.

Polymarket, which is not a poll, gave Becerra about a 96 percent chance and Hilton about 4 when Newsweek checked. Hilton wants the first Republican governorship in California in two decades, with Trump’s blessing and a Fox News résumé. Attention is not a coalition. A clip his superintendent candidate calls garbage does not move voters who already prefer the former federal health secretary.

Inside The AEGIS Alliance’s politics coverage, Trump-aligned campaigns pick a cultural fight, call the backlash courage, and leave material conditions alone. The same habit shows up when Donald Trump posts a senator’s cellphone number or when an Epstein-files protester is hauled from a Vandalia rally. Provoke, apologize without taking the post down, and blame the critics.

A Trump-endorsed campaign borrowed Pride imagery it wants to police

The other insult hits the voters the Pride flag is supposed to flatter. LGBTQ Nation noted how often ads borrow a queer moment and then abandon the people in the frame. Hilton does that. The flag is set dressing. The nervousness about dad is a closet gag. The ballot is the product. A home a couple can afford, a clinic that stays open, and whether a Trump endorsement means pressure on local police to join federal immigration sweeps were debate subjects on September 30. They did not fit the innuendo.

Hilton sells three-dollar gas, a home people can afford, and less bureaucracy. Just Try It never says how. Gates heard sexualization. Shaw heard a party losing its way. Hibbs heard a sin and still heard a useful sinner. Garcia heard a man losing. Voters living with California’s costs heard a bedroom sketch standing in for a platform.

Ballots for the November 3 election are in the mail, and the Golden Ticket is arguing in public. Becerra does not need to answer a dare he is already beating. More of that style sits in our संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका समाचार file, including Pete Hegseth’s Pentagon faith office, and in the wider news archive. When this faction runs out of a governing offer, it reaches for someone else’s body or someone else’s panic and asks everyone else to call that a plan.
