The married British Airways first officer, a father of one from Devon, snorted cocaine off a topless woman’s chest, kept drinking into the morning, and texted the details to a flight attendant. British Airways cancelled the service. A drug test at Heathrow ended his job. The Civil Aviation Authority pulled the medical certificate that lets a UK pilot touch a control column. About a year and a half later he was back in a cockpit anyway, flying freight. On June 3, 2026, that second airline died under him.

Melrose Arch, then a plate of cocaine

Beaton’s layover was supposed to be a legal rest. Instead, by his own texts, it became a bar crawl through what he called a « standard Joburg setup » in Melrose Arch: the Grillhouse steakhouse and Tiger’s Milk. He wrote that he met two local men, a young Spanish woman, and a Welsh woman on vacation. The group ended up at one of the local men’s apartments. Someone produced a plate. Beaton told the flight attendant, « I’ve been a very naughty boy, » The Sun reported in September 2023. He also wrote that he had lost his shirt, and that the room fell into « a debate about whose chest is the best to do a bump off. » That is his wording, not a headline writer’s. A BA source later called the decision to send those details to a colleague « extraordinarily dumb. » The colleague did the thing the safety system is built for. The report said he had already completed multiple cargo flights. The CAA would not discuss an individual file. European Cargo said it did not comment on personnel and that every pilot it employed met CAA standards. An aviation source told The Sun it was « disgusting » that he was allowed to fly again. Disgust is not a regulatory test. « Completely satisfied » is. Whatever file Beaton put in front of the CAA’s medical assessors cleared that bar. Nothing in the public record says the authority reopened it when the tabloids did.

European Cargo was a strange place for a second act, and a revealing one. The airline grew out of the pandemic rush to fly personal protective equipment, then settled into a niche of turning former passenger A340-600s into freighters. It was the sort of operator that needed experienced long-haul pilots and did not have a cabin full of holidaymakers to reassure. Cargo customers buy lift, not a morality play. That is why a man British Airways had fired for a Class A drug on the morning of a passenger flight could be legal in a freighter seat once a doctor and a regulator signed the medical.

European Cargo Curtain Call? On June 3, 2026, European Cargo entered administration. The BBC reported the filing with the loss of 178 jobs, while also noting that the full headcount impact had not been confirmed that day. Joint administrators from Teneo said the company had ceased trading after « a period of significant financial pressure, » driven by reduced flying, working-capital strain, and fuel costs. Redundancies were already being made. The airline’s last published accounts showed a pre-tax loss of $26 million in the year ending December 31, 2024, on top of a $30.6 million loss the year before, and net liabilities of $41.8 million.

The collapse was not a slow fade nobody noticed. In March 2026 European Cargo had opened a base at Teesside International Airport, with five weekly flights and a claimed 375 tonnes of freight, a deal the airport’s managing director, Phil Forster, called transformational. ch-aviation later reported that all six A340 freighters were parked in May, and that the last revenue flight was operated by G-ECLC on May 19, from Karaganda to Maastricht, with a ferry onward to Bournemouth. Three weeks after that landing, the jobs were gone.

The owner followed the airline

The cockpit Beaton had returned to was already a leased idea more than a durable company. Priority 1 Logistics had become the sole owner of the Bournemouth carrier in 2024. On June 24, 2026, FlightGlobal reported that provisional liquidators Damien Murray and Julian Moroney of Teneo Restructuring Ireland had been appointed over Priority 1 Group, the owner, and were trying to sell the business and its assets, including the A340 fleet, engines, and spares. Moroney said they would work with European Cargo’s administrators. A sale of parked jets is not a job offer.

There is no public report, as of the administration and the owner’s provisional liquidation, placing Beaton in a new airline. The 2023 line that he would never fly again was wrong. The 2025 line that he was back was right, and then the airline underneath that return stopped flying. A restored medical is personal. It does not travel with a failed carrier, and it does not obligate the next operator to hire the pilot whose texts ended a British Airways rotation. The CAA’s test remains what it was: rehabilitation, then a regulator that is completely satisfied. The framework sits on the UK Civil Aviation Authority site. What the Johannesburg night still shows is narrower than the jokes. A first officer narrated a crime to a colleague who was awake enough to stop a flight. That part of the system worked. The part that put him back in a freight seat is a medical judgment, not an apology, and the freight seat disappeared with 178 other jobs when the fuel math did.

More files on conduct that did not match the uniform are in The AEGIS Alliance’s Odd News desk, alongside International News.

BA first officer Mike Beaton was fired after a Johannesburg cocaine binge.
