A 14-year-old girl at Heartland Middle School in Edmond, Oklahoma, was pulled into a room with an uncovered window looking onto the school’s common areas, told to lift her shirt, show her bra, and spin. The principal was looking for a nicotine vape pen. Staff never found one. They never called her mother first. Oklahoma law says a strip search of a student shall never be permitted.<\/p>\n
Kristal Trenkamp filed suit in March 2023 in Oklahoma County District Court. The complaint names Principal Veronica Johnson, Heartland Middle School, and Edmond Public Schools. It alleges the search on May 10, 2021, was conducted in front of Johnson, a school resource officer, and another student. Johnson, the filing says, asked the girl what kind of underwear she was wearing under her pants and ordered her to lift her shirt high enough to expose her bra. The girl was made to \u00ab\u00a0bare her abdomen and the top of her boxers and spin.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n
NBC News<\/a> and local outlets confirmed the core of the filing. No vape pen was recovered. No warrant was obtained. Edmond Public Schools policy tracks state law: under Title 70, Section 24-102, \u00ab\u00a0in no event shall a strip search of a student be allowed,\u00a0\u00bb and no clothing except cold-weather outerwear may be removed during a warrantless student search.<\/p>\n The complaint alleged assault, negligence, invasion of privacy, and a Fourth Amendment violation, and sought more than $25,000 plus fees. It described the principal’s conduct as \u00ab\u00a0wrongful, extreme, and outrageous,\u00a0\u00bb beyond \u00ab\u00a0the bounds of all human decency.\u00a0\u00bb The student, the suit said, suffered severe emotional distress. Her lawyer, Shelby Shelton, later said the girl was pulled out of the district and put into online classes, and that the family was trying to sell their house to get into another district after the story went national.<\/p>\n Defendants removed the case to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma on March 27, 2023 (CIV-23-269-SLP, Judge Scott L. Palk). Trenkamp amended, adding the City of Edmond and restating five causes of action. A week later the parties jointly sent it back to Oklahoma County (CJ-2023-1168). The district argued in filings that Johnson had acted in \u00ab\u00a0bad faith,\u00a0\u00bb which, if true, would put her outside the scope of employment and shield the district, and that the plaintiff had not pleaded compliance with the Governmental Tort Claims Act. Those are defense arguments, not findings. The federal docket lists the removed action as disposed. A widely reported verdict or public settlement figure has not followed. The allegations remain contested claims.<\/p>\n The U.S. Supreme Court already drew a line in Safford Unified School District v. Redding<\/em> (2009), holding that school officials violated the Fourth Amendment when they strip-searched a 13-year-old Arizona girl on a tip about ibuprofen. Reasonable suspicion of a school-rule violation does not automatically authorize a strip search. Oklahoma went further than the federal floor and banned the practice outright.<\/p>\n A December 2025 Bloomberg Law investigation<\/a> found at least 40 federal civil-rights lawsuits since 2017 claiming children were strip-searched at school, often over vape pens and other minor offenses, often without parents being told. Oklahoma, Washington, New Jersey, South Carolina, Hawaii, and Wisconsin explicitly forbid the practice. That has not stopped administrators from trying it. In July 2026, seven families in Attala County, Mississippi, sued after a school resource officer allegedly made high-school boys strip, squat, and bend over over a bathroom vape detector.
