He accomplished this not only through his operations, but also inadvertently through his arrest.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Location: Akron, Ohio &#8211; Yet another Anonymous member by the name of James Robinson, who goes by the handle <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AkronPhoenix420\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@AkronPhoenix420<\/a>, was arrested by \u00ab\u00a0The Man\u00a0\u00bb or, law enforcement. Robinson has been charged by the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) for causing damages intentionally to a protected computer following the shut down of Akron city websites. Him being arrested, and the widespread attention as a result to his initiatives, has put the spotlight on the corrupt practices of Akron police.<\/p>\n<p>Although incidents of police corruption in the United States are wide spreading, numerous regions and cities seem to be more prone to abuses by police than others. Akron is a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, a city with track record for police corruption, Akron doesn&rsquo;t appear to be any different. This has been confirmed by other groups of Anonymous in the area of Akron.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Garrett of the Akron Beacon Journal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohio.com\/akron\/news\/anonymous-feds-say-akron-hacktvist-launched-cyber-attack-that-shut-down-citys-web-site-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a>\u00a0that \u201c<em>whoever shut down the city of Akron\u2019s website apparently believed Akron police and the city justice system were corrupt<\/em>.\u201d The passiveness of this statement implies the \u201capparent belief\u201d in this corruption is unfounded. After looking further into the Akron police\u2019s history however, there were decades of corruption uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>Officers have been\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.topix.com\/forum\/city\/akron-oh\/T63JBG7HBEH6L0O43\/akron-officers-fired-for-unnecessary-force\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fired for unnecessary force<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/court-justice\/index.ssf\/2015\/11\/two_east_cleveland_cops_plead.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">charged for conspiracy<\/a>\u00a0connected to extortion and robbery. Reports reveal they&rsquo;ve\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohio.com\/akron\/news\/local\/springfield-township-officer-fired-for-showing-up-to-work-under-the-influence-of-alcohol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">arrived to work drunk<\/a>, and one\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleveland19.com\/story\/34996473\/akron-cop-pleads-guilty-in-connection-with-a-drunk-driving-accident-that-injured-his-wife\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">former police sergeant<\/a>\u00a0critically injured his wife after he wrecked their vehicle while intoxicated. He was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohio.com\/akron\/news\/parents-of-akron-woman-urge-leniency-in-sentencing-for-man-responsible-for-crash-former-akron-officer-receives-two-years-of-probation-suspended-jail-sentence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sentenced to two-years probation<\/a>, and ordered to complete a three-day DUI program.<\/p>\n<p>Officer Zachary Rosen was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohio.com\/akron\/news\/ohiocentric\/arbitrator-reinstates-officer-fired-over-police-kick-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reinstated after being fired<\/a>\u00a0for kicking a handcuffed suspect in the face. Meanwhile, a fascist park ranger officer had\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleveland19.com\/story\/36479585\/summit-metro-parks-ranger-on-paid-leave-after-reportedly-assaulting-elderly-couple-for-honking-at-him\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">beaten an elderly couple<\/a>\u00a0simply for honking at him.<\/p>\n<p>During 2016, an officer by the name of Michael Simmons had\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vindy.com\/news\/2016\/dec\/05\/fired-ohio-officer-must-repay-k-to-progr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stolen over $26,000 from a charity<\/a>\u00a0fund used to purchase gifts for poor children. He was ordered to pay back $15,000.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of 2018, James Nice, former Akron police chief, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/metro\/index.ssf\/2018\/01\/former_akron_police_chief_char.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">charged with misconduct<\/a>\u00a0and pressed to resign. According to reports, James Nice made attempts to interfere in a criminal case involving his nephew. He also had coerced a female employee into a relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s the case of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/akron\/index.ssf\/2018\/05\/wrongful-death_lawsuit_filed_a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xavier McMullen<\/a>, a 17-year-old boy who, according to police, fatally shot himself with a gun in the back of a patrol car. Xavier\u2019s hands were\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/article206917159.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">handcuffed behind his back<\/a>, yet he was somehow able to fatally shoot himself in the head. One officer was docked 24-hours pay as a disciplinary measure. Xavier\u2019s family is still unsure of events, and hasn&rsquo;t received answers from the Akron police.<\/p>\n<p>According to Bleeping Computer\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/anonymous-member-arrested-in-ohio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">condescending report<\/a>\u00a0on Robinson, Federal Agents were able to track him down after he connected to his Twitter account from his home IP address. He was indicted under the federal computer-fraud statute and ultimately pleaded guilty to damaging protected computers. On October 3, 2019, U.S. District Judge Christopher Boyko sentenced him to six years in federal prison and ordered him to pay $668,684 in restitution to the city of Akron. Court filings tied the @AkronPhoenix420 persona not only to the August 1, 2017 takedown of akronohio.gov and akroncops.org, but also to a string of 2018 DDoS operations against targets that included the Ohio Department of Public Safety, the National Institutes of Health, the Defense Information Systems Agency, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the U.S. Department of Treasury. Investigators traced the attacks through Charter\/Spectrum and Verizon records back to an internet connection and phone registered in Robinson&rsquo;s name, and a May 2018 search of his Akron home turned up a Guy Fawkes mask and a cracked-screen phone matching one seen in the AkronPhoenix420 videos. The severity of that sentence, set against the comparatively light discipline handed to the Akron officers documented above, only sharpened the point Robinson had tried to make about how unevenly the justice system applies its weight.<\/p>\n<h3>Akron After the Arrest<\/h3>\n<p>The department Robinson was pointing at did not get quieter. On June 26, 2022, eight Akron officers fired more than 90 rounds at Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old Black man, hitting him more than 40 times after a traffic stop and a short chase. Walker was not holding a firearm when he was killed. A grand jury declined to charge the officers in April 2023. In October 2024 the city settled with Walker&rsquo;s family for $4.85 million. In December 2024 the Ohio Supreme Court allowed Akron to keep hiding the names of some of those uncharged officers from public-records requests.
