What the empty scrubs outside the World Medical Association actually named<\/h2>\n
The IMA Out coalition spent three days in Rotterdam beside the assembly. A public meeting at Theater Rotterdam on 8 October heard Palestinian surgeon Hussein Shomar, South African Medical Association president Mvuyisi Mzukwa, and BDS co-founder Omar Barghouti. The People’s Health Movement<\/a> had published the demand for suspension before the gowns went up.<\/p>\n One gown read Dr. S. Abu-Shareea. The AEGIS Alliance reported on 5 October<\/a> that Healthcare Workers Watch had counted ninety-five healthcare workers still detained. The line of cloth was a roll call, not a full census.<\/p>\n Jonathan Fluxman, speaking for IMA Out, used the language of war crimes. \u00ab\u00a0Our Palestinian colleagues are being killed and imprisoned, where they are starved and tortured. Their hospitals have been destroyed and patients driven out or murdered. The IMA has said and done nothing about these war crimes against health workers, patients and hospitals,\u00a0\u00bb he said. Thirty years of dialogue, he added, had given the Israeli Medical Association a sense of impunity. He told national associations to break their ties and suspend it now.<\/p>\n The coalition delivered a petition signed by more than 6,500 health workers. The Herald<\/a> reported that signatories include Ghassan Abu-Sittah, rector of the University of Glasgow, and the surgeon Nick Maynard, along with the healthcare advisory council of Jewish Voice for Peace, Doctors Against Genocide, and Global Health BDS. The petition asks for suspension until the Israeli Medical Association upholds medical ethics and humanitarian law, condemns the murder and torture of Palestinian health workers, and disciplines its own members.<\/p>\n
