In Warren County, Ohio, he is a defendant in a child-sex and animal-cruelty prosecution that grew from two counts into a stack of felonies. A grand jury charged him with rape, gross sexual imposition, endangering children, corrupting another with drugs, pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor, and misdemeanor counts of sexual conduct with an animal. Co-defendant Erica Lynne Grove, 43, a registered nurse, faced her own 24-count indictment. Prosecutor David Fornshell has alleged the pair drugged a child under six. Nothing in those charging papers has been proven at a completed trial. That sentence has to sit at the top of every rewrite, including this one.<\/p>\n<p>The case is no longer the December 2025 arrest story that first put McCollister&rsquo;s name back in national briefs. Grove pleaded guilty on August 24, 2026, to four misdemeanor counts of sexual conduct with an animal, took a dismissal of eight counts involving illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, and went to a bench trial before Judge Robert Peeler on the remaining child-sex counts. McCollister waived a jury and is set for his own bench trial. Public reporting through early September 2026 had not produced a verdict on the rape counts. Deputies in Warren County tied an IP address to McCollister, pulled warrants, and, prosecutors say, found illegal images of minors plus video of sexual conduct with two dogs. The original December 23, 2025, arrest was two counts: pandering obscenity involving a minor and sexual conduct with an animal. Those counts were swallowed by later indictments. The child-assault theory came after the digital search and produced the combined pile that local desks counted at 54 when both defendants were added together.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnati.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2026\/02\/02\/neighbors-with-benefits-star-accused-of-drugging-raping-child\/88476438007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">The Cincinnati Enquirer<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox19.com\/2026\/02\/05\/bond-set-tri-state-woman-former-reality-tv-star-indicted-sex-crimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">FOX19<\/a> tracked the February bond fight. Both pleaded not guilty on February 4. McCollister later entered a not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity plea, <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/swinger-reality-tv-contestant-pleads-insanity-sex-crimes-children-animals-11916521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">People<\/a> reported. An insanity plea is a defense, not a finding. Ohio still has to prove the counts. Grove still had her own case. Reality credits are not character evidence. A Google tip is not a jury form.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Neighbors with Benefits\u00a0\u00bb lasted two episodes in 2015 before viewer blowback killed it. McCollister and then-wife Diana were one of the Warren County couples on camera. That credit is why national outlets picked up a local warrant. It is not why the warrant exists. The warrant exists because a tech company sent a cyber tip and a sheriff&rsquo;s office followed an IP address. The indictment is the document that matters now.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Bond, the nurse defense, and a gag request<\/h2>\n<p>Judge Peeler set $250,000 bond each on February 5 and barred contact with children or animals if they posted it. Prosecutors had asked for $1 million. Defense lawyers pointed to clean prior records. Grove&rsquo;s attorney, Ed Perry, said his client is a registered nurse, that McCollister coerced her, and that graphic texts were appeasement, not agreement. When detectives later interviewed Grove, she described pressure tied to a history of cheating and said she had tried to meet \u00ab\u00a0fantasies.\u00a0\u00bb That is her statement to police, not a verdict. McCollister&rsquo;s lawyers asked the court to muzzle pretrial comments from the state. Both sat in Warren County Jail.<\/p>\n<p>Through the spring and summer the case moved the way a mid-sized county child-sex file moves when the defendants are locally known and the allegations are radioactive. Motions. Bond arguments. A request to keep the most graphic material out of the hallway. Local television kept a camera in the corridor because the A&#038;E credit still works as a chyron. The legal work happened in a courtroom that does not care about a 2015 episode order.<\/p>\n<p>On August 24, before opening statements in Grove&rsquo;s bench trial, the file changed shape. Grove pleaded guilty to counts 21 through 24, the animal-sex misdemeanors, each a second-degree misdemeanor that can carry up to 90 days and a $750 fine. Eight counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented performance were dismissed on jurisdiction grounds, according to local reporters in the room. She then opted to let Peeler, not a jury, decide the remaining counts: four of rape, five of gross sexual imposition, one of corrupting another with drugs, and two of endangering children. WLWT and FOX19 both carried the plea the same afternoon.<\/p>\n<h2>What a bench trial decides, and what it does not<\/h2>\n<p>A bench trial is not a secret trial. It is a trial without twelve neighbors. Peeler hears the evidence and makes findings of fact. Grove&rsquo;s defense is built around coercion, a clean record, and an argument that the most serious child counts cannot be proved beyond a reasonable doubt. The state&rsquo;s case is built around the digital search, the child&rsquo;s age, and the allegation that drugs were used to quiet a five-year-old. Those two stories cannot both be fully true. Only one of them needs to be proved.<\/p>\n<p>McCollister&rsquo;s path split from Grove&rsquo;s after the August plea. Local reporting in early September said he waived a jury and that his bench trial was calendared for late September. He still has the insanity plea on the table. Ohio&rsquo;s test is whether a severe mental disease or defect left him unable to know the wrongfulness of the acts. That is a high bar. It is also a bar that gets tested with doctors, not with a reality-show clip reel. If he proceeds to trial, the same judge who is sitting on Grove&rsquo;s remaining counts will hear a second record about the same household, the same devices, and the same alleged victim.<\/p>\n<p>Public reporting through the first days of September 2026 did not show a signed verdict sheet on the child-sex counts. McCollister has tape. The two-episode A&#038;E experiment is a gift to a chyron writer and a problem for a fair-trial argument. It tells a national audience that the man in the jail blues once performed a lifestyle on purpose. It does not tell that audience whether a five-year-old was assaulted in Warren County. Those are different questions. Mixing them is how a local felony file becomes a freak-show item and how a freak-show item loses the child in the middle of the frame.<\/p>\n<p>The responsible version of this story is slower. A tech tip. A warrant. Two defendants. A nurse who now admits the animal counts and denies the rape counts. A former cast member who says he was insane if he did what the state describes. A judge who will have to write findings instead of sending a jury out of the room. A child whose name does not belong in a headline. That is the inventory.
