Conover taught apologetics at Christian Unified High School in El Cajon for more than 14 years. He served as a vice principal and as Bible department head. On June 24, 2026, the day before a preliminary hearing, he pleaded guilty to five felony sex-crime counts involving a child family member. In late July 2026 a San Diego judge sentenced him to 15 years to life in state prison, plus five years concurrent, and ordered him to register as a sex offender. NBC 7 San Diego reported that the judge said Conover deserved \u00ab\u00a0every minute\u00a0\u00bb of the term. The now-17-year-old survivor addressed the court.<\/p>\n<p>The original complaint had listed 14 felonies and a theoretical maximum of 111 years to life. The plea cut that stack to five counts and a bargained term. Early coverage of the change of plea had put the expected sentence at 20 years to life; the term that landed was 15 years to life plus a concurrent five. The victim, identified in court only as Jane Doe, was not a student. School officials have said from the first day that the charged conduct happened off campus. That distinction did not spare the campus the questions that follow a teacher who spent years telling teenagers how to defend the faith.<\/p>\n<h2>From a no-bail booking to a life-tail sentence<\/h2>\n<p>Sheriff&rsquo;s deputies arrested Conover outside the Greenfield Drive campus on December 16, 2025, after a Child Abuse Unit investigation that started with an October 1 report. He was booked into San Diego Central Jail and held without bail. Judge Peter Lynch treated the alleged assault of a child as a violent felony that requires no bail under California law. Defense lawyers did not fight that order. A criminal protective order covered the victim.<\/p>\n<p>At arraignment on December 18, 2025, Conover pleaded not guilty to all 14 counts. Deputy District Attorney Julie Lynn said prosecutors were dealing with one victim and asked other possible victims to call the sheriff. He was then 49. By sentencing he was 50. The complaint alleged abuse between December 2015 and December 2019, beginning when Jane Doe was about 7. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsandiego.com\/news\/local\/ex-christian-school-teacher-deserves-every-minute-of-sex-abuse-sentence-judge-says\/4056715\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">NBC 7 San Diego<\/a> reported the 15-years-to-life term. <a href=\"https:\/\/roysreport.com\/former-california-apologetics-teacher-pleads-guilty-to-sexual-abuse-of-girl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">The Roys Report<\/a> placed the change of plea on June 24, 2026, one day before the preliminary hearing where prosecutors would have had to put evidence on the record.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1170147\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1170147\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1170147\" src=\"https:\/\/theaegisalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/El-Cajon-Bible-Teacher-Arrested-at-Christian-Unified-High-School-Faces-14-Counts-of-Child-Sex-Abuse-1.jpg\" alt=\"Headshot of Kevin G. Conover, the former El Cajon Bible teacher sentenced in the Christian Unified High School case.\" width=\"800\" height=\"684\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1170147\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">School leaders say they learned of the investigation only after Conover was taken into custody on campus.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>What Christian Unified told parents, and what it could not control<\/h2>\n<p>Superintendent Bob Ruhlman emailed families around 4:34 p.m. on arrest day. A faculty member had been arrested on \u00ab\u00a0very serious\u00a0\u00bb charges. The school suspended Conover at once and said law enforcement had told administrators the charges did not involve the school or any student. Media questions were sent to the Sheriff&rsquo;s Family Protection Detail.<\/p>\n<p>The courtroom at arraignment was packed with supporters, including current students. Former student Hannah Manroe told reporters Conover would have been her last suspect. That gap \u2014 the public teacher and the charging document \u2014 is why private-school hiring rules came up within hours. A LinkedIn profile later cited by The Roys Report listed Conover as vice principal of Christian Unified Schools beginning in March 2020 and did not show an end date. Heinkel said character and background checks at schools like this often fall short.<\/p>\n<p>The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing told ABC 10News it had no record of a state credential for Conover. Private schools in California are not required to hire state-credentialed teachers. Screening is a local choice. That is the policy hole this case sits in, separate from the family-member facts. Two teachers from one campus in a handful of years does not prove a conspiracy. Lynn&rsquo;s request at arraignment was blunt. If there are other victims, call the sheriff. Through early September 2026, prosecutors had not publicly announced additional victims or additional counts. That silence is not a finding. Registration as a sex offender follows him if he ever does. The school says the victim was never on its roster. The credential office says it never licensed him. Those three facts can all be true at once. They do not cancel each other. Parents who sent children to an apologetics classroom were entitled to more than a same-day email after the cuffs came out on Greenfield Drive. Private Christian schools market moral formation as a product. When a Bible department head is sentenced to a life-tail term for crimes against a child in his own family, that product is the thing on trial in the parking lot, even if Jane Doe never walked through the classroom door. The plea saved the county a preliminary hearing.
