UK Mother Corinna Smith Killed Her Husband With Boiling Sugar Water After Abuse Allegations and Must Serve 12 Years
NESTON, CHESHIRE — In the early hours of July 14, 2020, Corinna Smith, also known as Corinna Baines, then 59, mixed boiling water with about three kilograms of sugar and poured it over her husband, Michael Baines, 80, as he slept. Sugar raises the boiling point and makes the liquid stick. He lasted five weeks in hospital through operations and grafts, then died. The day before the attack, her daughter had told her of allegations that Baines had sexually abused children for years. Their son Craig had taken his own life in 2007.
On July 9, 2021, Chester Crown Court imposed a life sentence with a minimum term of 12 years, less time on remand and qualifying curfew. The Chester Standard and the Liverpool Echo recorded the sentence. The judge called it murder. The motive, the court accepted, was the allegations. Motive is not a defense to pouring boiling sugar on a sleeping man.
