In August 2023, three prisoners held the former Lostprophets singer for hours, stabbed him, and left him hospitalized with injuries that were serious and, that time, survivable. He was 46. On the morning of October 11, 2025, inside the same maximum-security prison in West Yorkshire, a makeshift knife ended the second chance. Watkins was 48. A jury sat through the spring of 2026 ready to decide who was guilty of murder. On May 22, Mr Justice Hilliard sent them home. “Very reluctantly, I’m going to discharge you and the case will have to be re-tried,” he said. “That’s disappointing for you and for everyone.” The retrial was penciled for February 8, 2027. A discharge is not an acquittal. It is a silence with a new date on it.

The BBC reported the collapse the same day. Serving prisoners Rico Gedel, 25, also identified in police references as Rashid Gedel, and Samuel Dodsworth, 44, had denied murdering Watkins and denied possessing a knife in prison. Prosecutors told Leeds Crown Court that Gedel stabbed Watkins three times with a homemade blade, then handed the weapon to Dodsworth, who threw it in a bin. The knife was recovered from the prison bins. Both men are due back for the retrial. Until a verdict exists, the allegations stay allegations, including the ones Gedel himself complicated from the witness box.

Jury discharged in Ian Watkins prison murder trial https://t.co/vBgncTUSui

— BBC News (UK) (@BBCNews) May 22, 2026

Watkins formed Lostprophets in 1997 and fronted the band until it ended around his arrest. (Matt Cardy)

The killing landed in a prison the British press calls Monster Mansion because of who is sent there, not because the nickname explains a death. Wakefield holds men serving some of the longest sentences in England and Wales. Watkins was one of them for a reason the sentencing judge did not soften. In December 2013, at Cardiff Crown Court, he admitted a string of child sex offences, 13 counts in all, including the attempted rape of a fan’s baby. Mr Justice Royce jailed him for 29 years, with six further years on licence. The judge said the case broke new ground and plunged to a new depth of depravity. He called Watkins a deeply corrupting, highly manipulative, and dangerous predator. Two women who were mothers of children Watkins abused were jailed, in the same prosecution, for 14 and 17 years. This account will not replay the acts. The length of the sentence and the judge’s language are the public record. They are also the reason other prisoners decided he was a target.

Jury in Ian Watkins murder trial discharged – two prisoners to be re-tried https://t.co/cusXqzF7mo

— Sky News (@SkyNews) May 22, 2026

The 2023 attack is the chapter people forget once a death replaces it. Watkins was taken hostage inside Wakefield for about six hours. He was stabbed more than once. A source told the Mirror, while he was still in hospital, that staff feared he could die and that survival would be luck. He survived. The prison remained his address. No public accounting in the years between fully answered how three men could hold a Category A prisoner that long inside a jail whose entire purpose is to make that impossible. The October 2025 killing makes the unanswered question sharper. The first violence was a siege. The second, on the prosecution case, was over within the morning routine, after cells were unlocked.

Gedel’s evidence, as reported from the trial before the jury was discharged, is the closest thing to a motive the courtroom heard, and the law does not require a motive to convict. He told the court he hated being held among sex offenders and had threatened to hurt “any number of paedophiles” if he was not moved. He said he was shifted onto Watkins’s wing after assaulting three prisoners elsewhere, and that he found himself in the next cell. He claimed he chose Watkins largely because of that proximity, not because of a long hunt. He also said part of him wanted to kill Watkins and part of him did not. “Sometimes what your heart wants is not what your brain wants.” Prosecutors were not asking the jury to mediate that sentence. They said Dodsworth knew an attack was coming and helped by taking the knife away, which in their theory makes him guilty of murder on a joint-enterprise footing even if only one hand used the blade.

After a drug arrest, searches of Watkins’s home and computers exposed the offences that sent him to Wakefield. (Matt Cardy)

A detail from earlier in the same trial, reported by the BBC on May 19, 2026, shows how narrow the fight had become before it imploded. Jurors had been sent out to deliberate. Mr Justice Hilliard had already told them there was no real dispute that Gedel was guilty of at least manslaughter. It was agreed, the judge said, that a deliberate and unlawful injury caused Watkins’s death. The live arguments were whether the killing was murder, whether Dodsworth joined it, and whether the knife charge stood against each man. Then, for reasons the court described only as legal, the jury was discharged and the deliberations were wiped. “Legal reasons” is a door the public does not get to open. It can hide a contaminated juror, a ruling that made the trial unfair, or a problem with evidence that a reporter in the room is not allowed to explain yet. What it cannot mean is that the prosecution folded in public. Both defendants remain accused. Both had pleaded not guilty.

Lostprophets is the other half of the name, and it should stay in proportion. Watkins started the band in Pontypridd in 1997. For a decade and a half it was a commercial rock act whose fans later had to reconcile the songs with the sentencing remarks. The band ended in 2013 as the criminal case became undeniable. The path ran through a drugs arrest in 2012. Searches of his home and computers produced the material that turned a narcotics file into a plea. Bandmates spent years saying they had not known. None of that changes the prison chronology. A man the state had locked up because he was dangerous to children was stabbed under the state’s roof, lived, and was later killed under the same roof.

Britain has a grim parallel file of child sex offenders attacked in custody. The AEGIS Alliance reported years ago on notorious offenders stabbed to death in British prisons. Those cases are often told as rough justice. The Watkins prosecution is a reminder that the state does not accept the genre. Hilliard’s court was prepared to treat the killing as murder. Gedel was already serving a life sentence for a different killing. Dodsworth’s role, if a jury finds he only disposed of a weapon or finds he planned a death, is the question a discharged jury never answered. People who posted that the death was a public service were cheering a homicide the Crown has decided to try twice.

There is a narrower institutional question that does not depend on anyone’s disgust. How does a Category A prisoner get held hostage for six hours in 2023, return to the same jail, and die in his cell in 2025 during the period when doors are open? Wakefield’s reputation is built on impossibility. The record in this one life is possibility, twice. An inquest and the retrial will not automatically produce the staffing numbers or the wing-move decision that put Gedel next door. Those documents would tell other governors whether the nickname describes the inmates or a blind spot in the building.

West Yorkshire Police locked the prison down after the death and investigated it as murder. Charging Gedel and Dodsworth was the visible half. Two other inmates were arrested early on suspicion of conspiracy, a strand that did not become the trial the jury heard. The trial that did happen opened in May 2026, ran long enough for Gedel’s own testimony, reached the door of a verdict, and stopped. A provisional listing for February 8, 2027, means another year in which Watkins is dead, the accused are unconvicted of this killing, and the public story is a jury sent home.

Anyone waiting for February should expect the same constraints this trial hit. The sexual offences stay inside the sentencing facts, because the acts are not something a newsroom needs to re-describe in order to explain a prison homicide. The stabbing stays inside what prosecutors can prove with a weapon, a bin, and a body. The line Hilliard already drew, that an unlawful injury caused the death and that this much was not really disputed as to Gedel, may be the floor of the next trial. The ceiling is a murder verdict against one man or two, or a jury that this time is allowed to finish.

Watkins does not become a martyr because the process is unfinished. He remains what Royce said he was in 2013, and he remains a prisoner the state was obligated to keep alive while it held him. Those two facts fit in the same paragraph without endorsing the knife. The retrial is the state’s attempt to put names on the knife. Until that attempt works, HMP Wakefield’s record of Ian Watkins is an injury, a survival, a death, and a jury that was thanked and dismissed.

Further reporting on prisons, policing, and offences against children is collected in crime news from The AEGIS Alliance.

Ian Watkins survived a 2023 hostage stabbing at HMP Wakefield and was killed there in October 2025.
