A Dakota County judge on Monday sentenced Jason Philip Filas, 49, to life in prison for fatally stabbing Danielle Grace Warren, the 32-year-old mother of his three children, inside a Burnsville home on May 7, 2025. The term arrived sixteen months after Warren screamed into a phone that Filas had a knife, and fourteen days after a different judge erased the domestic-abuse no-contact order that was supposed to keep him away from her.<\/p>\n

Judge David Lutz imposed the sentence after Filas pleaded guilty on September 18 to first-degree murder while committing domestic abuse with a past pattern of domestic abuse, the Sun Thisweek reported<\/a>. The plea agreement sets a mandatory life term with the possibility of parole after 30 years. Two counts from an October 2025 grand jury indictment, first-degree premeditated murder and second-degree intentional murder, were dismissed at sentencing, the Pioneer Press reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Filas entered what Minnesota lawyers call a Norgaard plea. He accepted criminal responsibility and conceded he is not innocent, while maintaining that he does not remember the stabbing, CBS Minnesota reported<\/a> from the court file. That plea does not require a defendant to narrate the killing from memory. It requires him to agree that the state’s evidence would convict him.<\/p>\n

“No sentence can fully heal the loss and pain endured by Danielle’s family, friends and loved ones,” Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena said after the hearing. “I hope this outcome will provide some measure of peace.”<\/p>\n

A sister heard the last call from 117th Street<\/h2>\n

The criminal complaint<\/a> in court file 19HA-CR-25-920 places the killing on the 2000 block of 117th Street East, the Burnsville address listed for Filas. Officers already knew the house from earlier domestic-violence calls.<\/p>\n

Just after 9:30 a.m. on May 7, 2025, Warren phoned her sister. She was scared, the complaint says, because Filas was watching the home’s security camera from somewhere else and had seen another man leave that morning. She wanted her sister’s keys so she could get the children out. The complaint identifies Filas as the father of Warren’s three children. She said he was “freaking out.”<\/p>\n

Minutes later Warren called again. This time Filas was inside. Her sister told investigators that Warren pretended she was talking to police. Then the pretense broke. Warren screamed, “He has a knife! Call 911! Call 911!” She kept screaming for her sister to hurry. The line went dead.<\/p>\n
