Off-duty San Diego, California sheriff’s deputy arrested for DUI, breached security gate at Naval Base Coronado

(The AEGIS Alliance) – As per a statement released by the department on Saturday, a San Diego Sheriff’s deputy was taken into custody on Friday night for attempting to enter a naval base in Coronado without the necessary clearance.

The San Diego Sheriff’s department reported that Sergeant Michael Cruz, who has served for 17 years, was taken into custody on Friday for driving under the influence (DUI). He was booked into the San Diego Central Jail. The department further clarified that the incident occurred when he was off-duty.

The department’s statement also mentioned that when Sergeant Michael Cruz drove through the checkpoint at Naval Air Station North Island, military guards fired shots at his car. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.

According to FOX 5 San Diego, the incident caused Naval Air Station North Island to enter a temporary lockdown.

Sergeant Michael Cruz has been released on his own recognizance and is currently on paid administrative leave, while the department carries out an internal investigation. Sergeant Cruz is part of the Sheriff’s Emergency Planning Detail.

The San Diego Sheriff’s Department’s statement reads “The Sheriff’s Department will not tolerate criminal behavior in its ranks and will hold employees accountable for their actions. We are committed to holding our employees to a high standard.  Acts such as this do not reflect our values, principles, or commitment to our communities.”

  1. “Sergeant Michael Cruz has been released on his own recognizance.” after he “drove through the checkpoint at Naval Air Station North Island.”-no big surprise there, he’s no threat, and he’s not going to go back and do it all over again -right?
