California Highway Patrol officer charged for assaulting female driver during traffic stop

(The AEGIS Alliance) – A California Highway Patrol officer, Todd Cookston, has been charged with assault under the color of authority for allegedly hitting a woman during a traffic stop in Santa Clarita last year.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Cookston faces one felony count of assault for the incident that occurred on March 2, 2022, on the 5 Freeway.

The altercation took place after the 21-year-old woman got out of her car, and Cookston allegedly punched her in the face.

The CHP is currently investigating the incident, and Cookston is set to be arraigned on April 25.

District Attorney George Gascón emphasized that excessive force by law enforcement officers will not be tolerated in Los Angeles County, and also said that “the alleged behavior exhibited by this officer was reprehensible.”
